They usually push laws like this with one of two goals in mind:

1. Make headlines for political gain.

2. Give new prosecutorial tools to District Attorneys, or new sentencing tools to Judges.


Or both.

The odds of Joe College doing sixty days for bangin gears off a stoplight if he's otherwise an upstanding citizen are pretty slim.


I have kind of a soft spot for street racers, because I was one. But even that bears a certain amount of clarification. It was a different time. We did it in an industrial district that shut down at 5pm on Friday evening and was a ghost town until monday morning, so there was zero "regular" traffic. And we always did our best to watch/obstruct possible corridors where regular traffic could have come from. We policed ourselves, and alcohol and idiocy was not tolerated.

I believe you have such negative attention and cries for enforcement today because of the "Fast and the Furious" mentality, and the inevitable drinking and showboating that goes hand in hand with the culture.
