Plug in electrics would make awesome traffic jams when they ran out of juice on a summer day after sitting in traffic running the AC! At least the Transit is probably better to get into and out of than a crown vic. I say we start stamping out Checker cab bodies with modern materials and bolt in an eco tec. Those things have a cavernous back seat and an equally huge trunk, and are easy to get in and out of.

Now that would be a cool idea. Build hybrid Checkers for NYC. I like it.

I can't remember the last time I was in a taxi...it was probably in Japan, 1984, and the taxi had a column shifted 4 speed manual trans (on the wrong side, of course)

Pretty much everything on that list other than the CV are jokes. D you know many times you stuff 3 or 4 people in a cab? Let's see them do that in a Prius or Jetta.

The only thing I think of when you say NYC Cab is a Checker. Make them with CNG (hell they're big enough to carry the tanks) and you've got a winner

              all bullsh*t aside...

the vanagon could just run forever with the efficent they look for and ability for weight rating...keeping the front engine bay away from passengers , they still have to eat NYC, why aggrevate it?

I hopped in one overseas (inline four, rear engine bus, never saw before) it took all of us, gear included.

WTF is wrong with that as a taxi? nothing. ???

Not sure who was talking about a microbus, I was talking about the new Jetta that's an approved taxi. As an owner of 3 Jetta'a I can say they are not taxis.
