That's so cool! I'd love to get to one of the festivals, but I'm affraid I don't have the esthetic to pull off a costume like your in-laws.

I still think a vehicle like the Captain built would be the best I could do...

Hmmm neighbors have an older Jeep Cherokee that runs but it's rusting apart. No, no no, no more projects yet

        It starts small .........
An older Jeep Cherokee that runs but is rusting apart might be the cheap introduction you need .....
We are all enablers here, if you haven't figured that out yet.

I first met Dan, standing on an old WWII glider base airstrip in Maxton, NC in 2008.
Yes, I know how he is.

4x4 Jeep is a Great Starter Vehicle.
Look at as a Open Canvas,
Sawzall, Air Chisel, Modifiers 16 oz to 12 pounders,..... Welders, rivets, That Salvage Pile of Iron behind the shop.....
And Visualize something between a "Mad Max" Vehicle, a "WW1 Armored Car" and a "Boiler Powered" lunar lander.......

I suppose my gray with white pinstripe coveralls that look like old time steam rr engineer coveralls and a pair of my welding goggles (like the ones it seems every costume has with the clip on eye loope) and a pair of gloves I've had since I was a teenager could be pressed into service. Hmmm...
