The fireworks/pyrotechnics division of the company I worked for at the time was run by a man who is still a good friend of mine.

Saddest thing at the time was that the consensus among the professionals in the industry was that they were suprised something like that hadn't happened sooner. Too many undertrained and underqualified people running around shooting in venues that should never have allowed smoking, let alone pyrotechnics.

Saddest thing now is that there still is - it really hasn't changed much.

If I recall correctly, the Beineke's (the G-Series folks) were at the Rhode Island show and narrowly escaped with their lives.

Now that you mention it, I believe Gary did say something about being there. They are metalheads so it makes sense.

When I got out fo school with my highly polished journalism degree and started facing down job offers of like 20 grand a year, I said screw it and used my CDL to get work as a delivery guy for a spring water company. My route was the Providence area and the day after the fire I was delivering in Warwick, RI. The street the fire happened on was closed. I had customers on that road but for obvious reasons could not make the deliveries.

There was a command post/family gathering center set up in the Crowne Plaza hotel up the road. When I finished my route for the day I radioed to the boss and asked if I could leave my left over inventory at the hotel for the people.

I walked in, talked to the manager and left a stack of case packaged water in the corner of the room. There were a lot of people there in complete misery. It was a sad deal.

Not sure how many know that one of the brothers who owned the club was one of the most prominent local television news reporters in Boston at the time. He was on WHDH 7. It was so odd to see them reporting on the story referencing the guy who you saw on the news reporting the night before.

Very sad deal. Not sure if they have done anything with the site of the fire. There have been talks of a memorial.

I remember that station, I lived in rhode island in the early 80s. Gald to see it is still up..it wasn't metal then.

a crammed club with pyrotechnics in it...safe or not, I would have never entered.
When desiring to let loose with crazy music, there is no regrets in a sand pit and bon fire.

The thought of a stampede and last seconds is grotesque.
