I did in Jr. High and it SUCKED! It put me in my freshman yr. in High School a year younger than an already picked on crowd

Go for it. I wouldn't want to take a chance on feeling like I held him back, ever

I'm in 8Th grade and last year they moved a sixth grader to seventh and he was book smart but not commonsense smart and his maturity level was good enough to skip a grade
but he did and in 2 months he was back in 6Th grade

Dumb mistakes, went into business with the wrong people, money isn't the thing that motivates me most, I like spending money more than I like saving it, I take more risks than most people, I can be a total idiot, etc, etc...

How about you Spidey, how come your not rich?

Re: Anyone here ever skip a grade in school?

I skipped my junior year and started my senior year with the same class. I had enough credits to graduate a year early but spent it working and playing, with cars of course. I was a straight 'A' student up to my junior year and then got my drivers license, my folks said it ruined my life. ;D
I would ask your son what he wants and go from there. He sounds smart enough to know the consequences and if he is into academics more than sports, it shouldn't affect him that much. I started school early and was one of the youngest in class, plus my family moved constantly and I never had a chance to make a lot of friends. Being the new kid, I spent more time doing my work and studying so I know how he will feel when the other classmates give him a hard time.

I graduated at 17 (born in December), and I think one reason was the district I started in had the cutoff date in September so I started "later" than my parents wanted, so when we moved I skipped and instead of being older than most, I ended up being one of the youngest. Didn't bother me one way or another; I don't think it's really a big deal. If someone skips 2, 3 or 5 years, that might make a big difference and cause many problems for the kid. As far as being challenged, and scholastic aptitude, in those standardized tests we had to take every two years, I always scored in the 95th to 99th percentiles, or "12th grade" level in math, English, etc, even in grade school. So I don't believe skipping one grade is going to solve the problem of lack of challenge in school. It's really important to find an outstanding school, and I remember that's what my parents always tried to do before deciding where to move to exactly, to find the best school districts in any given city (we moved a lot; I went to 10 schools on 3 continents by the time I graduated from high school). Have schools deteriorated so much now (30 years later) that a kid can't find any academic challenge? What about private schools? They might be the answer, though probably costly.
The only private school we have around is a Catholic one and that's not an option. The main reason for the kids going to the military academy is because of the challenging curriculum. Yes, the schools have deteriorated that much, plus a lot of the kids don't speak English as a first language and that is pretty detrimental in class. I think I'm just going to go ahead and put him in 6th and see how it goes, if he flounders or doesn't like it, I'll just switch him back. For me, the pros are outweighing the cons.....
Yeah, I think it's a tragedy and crime that our schools are catering to the non-English crowd at all. Not one dime should be spent on that BS. I speak other foreign languages, but THE language in the US is English, and if someone doesn't like that, get the f$%$# out!! Besides, our schools have no right spending one cent on illegals, either (where ever that is the case). It all runs to the detriment of our school system, our children, our society and our future.

I'd go ahead and make the jump; I think your son will handle it, no problem. I'd do everything to give him a fighting chance to succeed in life. Since there are no appropriate private schools in your area, are there any other public schools in your city or surroundings you could transfer him to?

                  Good luck!

That's kind of funny because it was my grandfather's favorite mocking question to my dad. Tied for first place was another gem, "all that book-learnin' and not a lick of common sense!" My dad always did like to impress people with "book-learnin" and used the G.I. Bill to fund college and beyond, finally ending up with a B.S., a Ph.D. in biochemistry (first person to map out vitamin C on a gas chromatograph), M.D. in pathology, nuclear medicine and hospital administration, as well as an MBA in hospital management. He used to joke that he himself comprised more doctors than anyone else in the family combined. :D : So no wonder why his dad always gave him shlt about it. ;D

I got held back in pre school. Parents and teachers thought if I was a year older than the bunch, I'd be a leader. I was only a year older smart ass.

I notified the school today that we were going to allow him to skip. Hopefully we're making the right choice. Thanks for all the input guys.
