    Hey all,

Turns out there ARE cool cars in central FL. Check out these shots from the first Billetproof show at the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing in Ocala FL (about 75 miles north of Tampa on I-75). As some of you know I just moved back to FL after many years in Southern California, so I was stoked to see this type of scene here. People were friendly & polite and the organizers put on a great show. Of course the museum alone was worth the 150 mile drive from Sarasota. They expected 150 cars & got over 500 by some accounts. There is also big thread on the HAMB if you want to see more; that's where I heard about the show. I just squeaked in with my '64 Buick Special wagon, in fact they commented at the gate "looks a little new". To be honest it was mostly 30's-50's junk, but mostly nice junk and some very creative builds. Enjoy...

Thanks for posting. I'm not too sure about the merit of the '57 hood as a roof insert in the A sedan.

Yeah, a lot of the cars had a "found art" kind of feel, like thrown together with whatever un-rusty metal they could find on the east coast. I would say they were not afraid to have fun with building the cars, so that was refreshing. Not much attitude at this show, which is nice after years of uppity SoCal events.

      some more...

It's really no different than trying to glue them back on after she has her way.

So ledfoot, you moved to Sarasota. My wife is from Venice just south of there. I haven't been down in a while as there really isn't much for me to do there but next time I do come I'll have to look you up.

I had a guy call me last friday and asked if I wanted to ride along to billetproof but I had to work saturday and had too much going on. Glad you had a good time.

I'm glad someone went. I was on duty yesterday reading Rod and Kulture when I saw that this show was going to be in Ocala the 22nd. I reached for the phone to call a buddy or two in Orlando to give them the head's up and I noticed that yesterday's date was the 23rd.
For those that are interested, the billetproof car show also will be in Detroit on June 7th, Chehalis, WA June 28th, and in Antioch, CA Sept 20th.
                          There's also a site here: www.billetproof.com

Thanks a lot for the pictures, ledfoot. Looks like I missed another good show. Would have been worth going just to see that Zypher.

                              Monster,

I have lived in or visited Florida for the last 27 years. In all of that time, I never saw this scene emerge. I'm glad to see cars like this in FL. When I say cool cars I mean stuff that's atypical, creative and cool to me; not the usual muscle car scene or exotics.

msc66, shoot me an email when you're passing through to Venice!

everyone else, you're welcome. I'm looking forward to next year and my hunch is it has already outgrown Big Daddy's place...

ps the Detroit show is good too, I happened to be in town for the show 2 years ago.
