    You Can't Get Red

We tried to buy a new car yesterday. Buy one or order one, or something. We don't need one (right now), but...

My mindset is this, and Sue Unit went along with it. I plan to retire in 7 years if the numbers look survivable, and I don't want our best newest ride to be 12 years old when I do. And with used cars going at such a high value these days because of all the becauses...

I've had it with used cars, you're buying somebody else's problems and history. And here, I'm talking to a nation full of wrenchers who could fix the space shuttle with a coat hanger and go another million miles. That's not me. I can "work on" anything, but sure can't fix it. I can put gas in a car without getting hurt or damaging it, and that's about it. I know it and have proven it. We're AAA candidates but we've never joined.

To shorten the story, Sue Unit's last 3 cars have been red Fords. That's what she loves and wants. They didn't have anything close to what we wanted on the lot or within 500 miles of here, and you can't order a red car from Ford now. Red has been removed from the color chart at Ford.

Why? Because one of the chemicals or pigments that makes red paint comes from Japan. Japan is still shut down, so it's unget-able. End of story.

Oh, and thanks again Milner! We may not be done yet, we'll see.

Red automotive paint has been more ex$pensive than other colors for the past few years in the aftermarket.I miss the old days when a person could actually build a vehicle on the dealers order form rather than being told that you can't get that option without buying the included special delux pkg.If they won't order or sell me red paint with a manual transmission,I walk out.

The car mags all have been reporting that the metallics in the paints were made in Japan. They have been affected Japan's earthquake. Ford isn't the only maker. Chrysler has stopped offering several colors in their lineup. Good news, if you like rental car white, that's still available.

god forbid they try to have an american company make the colors...that would just be stupid.

Any time PDub - I'm continually getting product direction letters coming through the email with paint changes. You can't get tuxedo black (a really cool metallic black) due to chemical supply issues either.
Yup - it's a "world" economy - and I'm guessing it's crazy expensive to deal with EPA and OSHA issues in these chemical plants - so - they ship the bad juju polution to another continent to make it happen.

Hopefully they'll reconsider and start making more of this stuff here - I agree Joe, but then again we've had our share of nasty weather disasters in recent years too.
