It's a Daihatsu Hijet....and that's about all I know about it. What the hell is it?? Today was the first time I'd ever seen one.

Used lots in private commercial settings but I didn't think they were US road legal. Gray market!
To answer your question it is a Japanese diesel tractor with a cab.Last edited by Brian Lohnes; November 27, 2011, 08:38 PM.That which you manifest is before you.

Japanese diesel tractor, eh? It doesn't seem big enough to haul much. I thought it was kind of neat looking, but it doesn't look like it would go very fast. If you could get it road legal, it might be good to putt around town, but I'm thinking that you'd want to keep it away from the interstates!Formerly Shannon (aka: HillbillySailor). 2549 posts.

Glorified golf cart. About as fast. Top speed was about 45 mph. They were all over Okinawa when I there in the 70's. They're great for inner city deliveries and such. There are van versions as well. One of my school friends parents had the passenger van version.BS'er formally known as Rebeldryver

A Kei truck. Usually limited to a 660cc engine, capable of slower highway speeds. Grey market indeed. In some places, they are used as farm trucks. I've got a dealership in Dewey-Humboldt that sells a bunch of HiJets, Suzuki Carry, and Kia Bongo. Here they're in the same class as street-legal quads, side-by ATV's and smaller dune buggies and can be licensed for road use.Editor-at-Large at...well, here, of course!
