  • Ford C-4 trans question

I got a 72 Ranchero today. 302/C4. It shifts a little late and harsh 1-2, and I have to let off the gas to get it to shift 2-3 when up to temp. It's fine when cool. I though the modulator was plugged to the wrong source, but it's not. I'll check some more in the morning. But, any ideas guys? Thanks

Modulator not blown? That might be why...

I will. Should it have some sort of return spring that keeps it pulled forward?

            I looked my 1970 Motor's Repair Manual.

For erratic shifts 1-2 and 2-3 and engine overspeeds for 2-3 shifts:

            1. Manual Linkage (that's the shifter linkage adjustment in Drive)
            2. fluid level
            3. Vacuum diaphram unit or tubes restricted, leaking or maladjusted.
            4. reverse servo.
            5. check control pressure.

The rest is internal problems. I'd start by making sure the shifter is adjusted correctly.

Let me know if you need info on column or floor shifter adustment.

Shifter adjustment's fine. You can "feel" that. No overspeed (slippage) on 2-3. It just hangs in 2 until you let off the gas. Just like a Chevy with the modulator plugged to the wrong source (or unplugged). So, I'm hoping for a leak in the mod line or bad mod. Figures it acted up after a reasonable length test drive (after I paid for it).

You know how to rebuild a C4? I think Transtar is still over off of Burbank Blvd.

Worst case to me would in the valvebody, $30 from wit for a c4.

A lot of people put homemade shift kits in them.
