Re: What is the most over-rated car of all time?

aw man, have any of you guys bashing on the DeLorean ever checked one out? the coke money didn't come along in time to save the engine program, but otherwise that is a well put together car!

As far as Toyota's being boring, well they gave us the almighty 2JZ. 5-6hp per cube on stock crank, rods, pistons, etc. is awesome.

I'm going to agree with eric68 and say anything with a 426 Hemi was over rated.

I know I will get flamed for this but considering that these cars are going for multi-millions of dollars vs. how they perform, I vote for the 1970-1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda convertibles.

There are plenty of really fast cars from the muscle era that you can stock your garage with for the same money as one of these Cudas.

Get ready to hate me: LS-6 chevelle never seen a any ware neer stock one that was fast don't think there that I have ever seen a "stock" 454 that was as bad ass as a 427 . I am aware that 454 + sized big chevy are possibly the best drag race motor you could ask for, just suck in stock form.
To prove I can even find fault with my the wholy blue oval any 5.0 with a auto is a turd and is over rated late model tuner stangs (roush, saleen, and others) without a blower are over priced and not that fast

The H2 is the most over rated. Its a tank that cant really be rock crawled. For the money, a much better rig can be built.

The standard H3 is overrated. However, with the Adventure Off Road Package, its the best performing Hummer currently being made. Add in the Alpha 5.3 V8.... and you have decent off road potential.

None of these are as good as an old fashioned Jeep, but the H3 can still be fun. I would never buy an H2 or H3, but they are fun to drive.
H1's were designed for the military with no thought of selling them to the public. It was our Governator who convinced them to do so.

The H2 is nothing more than a Tahoe with an overweight body replacement. A pig if there ever were one. On top of that, they charged $15 grand more than a Tahoe for it.

I say the ZL1 engine was over rated, but the 69 Camaro in general I think was under rated.
How many years after production did it take before we said "Hang on, that's a great car, let's restore it" and start pulling them out of paddocks and barns..? At the time, like you say, it was probably considered quite ordinary.

You may pick on handling and performance of the base models, but consider the price they sold for.

they already are being recalled... sadly.

mid and late 90s trucks that were the first to use "recycled cars" for frame material, have frames that rot form the inside. I saw one at the dealership a few weeks ago. Toyota bought it back, you could stick ascrewdriver through many parts of the frame.

all those yoda trucks are rot buckets
the 22r tractor engine may run 4ever , but a chevy or ford inliner runs longer and you never even have to change the oil

Pretty much anything I buy. I get all geeked up over what I am going to do, spend thousands of dollars only to figure out it won't work, will cost at least 3x more than thought it should, and what I do manage to finish, doesn't quite meet expectations. To answer the question "What is the most over-rated car of all time?" - MINE!

Nevertheless, I am still planning a little caper involving one '77 Skylark and LSX power!

Anything that pulls itself by the front tires! ;D Any Corvette built between '67 and '01. Anything not built in the U.S.

Re: What is the most over-rated car of all time?

Why all the hate for the ZR-1 Corvette? The only thing I'd say about it is that they were WAY too expensive, other than that their performance is legendary and they can still run with the majority of cars today. Remember that they are nearly 15 years old now and the final version did put out an honest 405hp and went to 7500rpm!

I totally agree with the 426 Hemi being over-rated. Everyone seems to think anything with a Hemi is instantly fast, even if reality says otherwise. Mopar understands this still hence their liberal use of the word Hemi to sell new 300Ms, Chargers, Rams, Magnums, etc. None of those cars will hold records for performance, but the owners think they are fast just because it's got a Hemi.

I'm going to add two more to the mix. The Mazda RX-8. A surprisingly heavy car for being so small, and a low HP, high RPM engine whose starter motor makes more torque. A co-worker thought his RX-8 was better than my lowly stock 2000 SS Camaro until I easily ran away from him after work one day. Those things are slower than most import family sedans! So much for calling them a 'sports' car.

The other one on my list is the Honda S2000. So what if it makes 120hp per liter! With only 2.0 liters that means it only makes 240hp total. 167lb-ft of torque at 6800rpm in a 2800lb car makes for something that has trouble getting out of the way of a glacier.

I feel compelled to clear things up a bit on my end.......

Believe it or not, I love Corvettes. Always have......

I'd own a 90-95 ZR-1, but for all of the hoopla about that damn DOHC 5.7, it just doesn't live up to expectations(in my mind, anyways...just an opinion).Unfortunate, but true.

Hell, that thing should have been pumping 450HP MINIMUM.
200+MPH numbers should have been as easy as breathing.

                                In defense of the Hemi...

1960's fuel drag racers ran "real" hemis on 100% load....stock blocks....iron heads....and they lived for more than 2 passes. Those guys never even pulled the heads unless something went WAY wrong.

That fact alone makes me respect the elephant....although I do cherish the moment every time I see a small block chevy powered car clean one out...a la the 2007 Pump Gas Drags Final.

The big black Hemi Charger Vs the little 4th Gen Camaro with LS power. Steve Reinhard's Camaro left with the jacket (although Jim Pranis's Charger was a wounded animal headed into the final).
