You get some Comet, and you wash the car with it. Duh.

Sprinkle it on there liberally and scrub with a large sponge. Sorry, it won't make quarter panels magically reappear.

      Re: Comet Wash?

That's an old timers trick. I've seen it done.

We pulled a '38 Caddy Limo, '42 Caddy Army Staff Car, a '57 Studebaker Golden Hawk, and a 61 Chrysler 300G from a barn in NH. All were in good shape, but with dead paint.

No problem says my buddy who bought the cars. He brings out a bucket of warm water, a few sponges and some Comet. I'm thinking he's lost it, but I watched and it worked quite well.

Hose down the car and wash it off.
Wet car down again and sprinkle Comet on it in the area you are washing and use the sponge to rub it around. You are in theory, wet sanding the dull paint off.
Rinse it off and repeat as necessary.

You will get a shine, but not the same as if you had buffed and waxed it.

If this actually helps your paint, chances are it will dull up again very quickly.

          Re: Comet Wash?

Seth - I have a variable speed buffer I picked up from HF - I used it to buff out the ski boat - the gel coat was very chalky -- one pass with 3m rubbing compound and a "wool" bonnet -and it shines pretty good, I've not had time to take a finer compound to it to really make it shine.

I would think with the body lines of that car a polishing compound and a foam pad instead of the wool pad would do wonders....

is it still the factory laquer? if so you'll have to be real careful not to burn any off the hard edges - blue 3m tape is your friend.

if you're going to cut up the quarters to replace them - why bother shining up the old paint now?

I agree, it will look weird with shiny paint right up to where the body disappears. I'd rather have it look like "I'm driving it, so I don't care how it looks for now" than "this is the best I could do for now"

"back in the day"...we always used "Bon Ami" cleanser in the gold can with the "chic" on it (baby chicken!). It says right on the can "hasn't scratched yet!" Make a paste with water and it'll clean 'er right up!

For a little extra shine after you washing it with comet, get a bottle of Future floor wax and paint it on with one of those foam paint brushes. It will level out as it dries into an acrylic clear coat. It's not permenant but if you want to see what your car would look like shiny for a little while it usually does the trick.

floor wax works great to put a LASTING shine on tires too.

A buddy of mine's father used it once a season or so on his boat trailer tires --- lasted for years with no dry rotting.

Just as Lemon Pledge is a good alternitive to the Mist and shine products!!
