  • Sleepers? Is there a thread on here about them?

If not, lets start. I have tried to find a sleeper forum. Most people are into chrome and flowmasters. I dig that, just in the mood to see sleepers. Closest I can think of is stock appearing drag site. Thoughts?
I grew up with the family car being a 69 Impala SS427 with the little tiny 427 badge. Wasn't too fast but surprised a few here and there. So I guess I come about it naturally.

Well, my first car (back when) was a '67 Nova, crap brown w/ little round hub caps, not even an SS, but w/ the 275hp 327, stock, in a very light car. Fantastic burnouts, surprised even me. But gawd what a bad handling car. I guess after that I started going for them mag wheels and all and abandoned the sleeper thing.

I guess I have had a few, but still, cannot hide a v8 ready to go.

Sleeper today is not listening for the non-siamese fires (big block)...or high compression, or lope.

it takes a lot more than that today.
even a porsche whimpers down to a purr..or the mercedes diesel wagon hiding the hx35.

      very tricky today.

I made a playlist a few years ago, I was into finding sleepers.

the flat plane v8 might have a funny future on this subject... will have to wait it out.

My definition of a "sleeper" is a car that has been modified to improve its performance, without changing its outward appearance. So my question to you is; how are you going to look at sleepers and know it is one ?

IDK about thread dedicated to sleepers but there are a couple big block wagons, a '66 F100 Eco-boost combination, and a few other unusual combinations. Not sure any of these fit the sleeper moniker or not but they are cool/different.

I had a triple black 69 SS Impala as well, but it wasn't subtle. There was a 69 Impala custom coupe in that pale yellow similar to the one in the picture. He went a long, long way to making a sleeper. So looked like Granny's Bingo car. It was a 396 car, but on the outset it looked completely stock. It was 13:1 compression 468, with slurry ported iron intake manifold and exhaust manifolds. Ported 850 Q Jet, and the best part was the fogger nitrous system that was plumbed under the intake manifold. The lines ran to the back of the block and through the intake rail by the firewall. With huge Caddy mufflers and a nitrous cam with really wide lobe separation angle, it idle smooth and quiet. The 4.11 gears made it very very hard to beat on the street. This was all ten years before FAST drag racing started up. It is still my favorite sleeper.

Though I've never seen it in person , I believe Randal's Buick is a prime example

Its kinda hard to do today. When there was alot of cars around you could get away with a plain Nova or a Dart but not anymore because if it looks kinda clean and "healthy" but not really fast you are a suspect. You kind of need a car like a 96 Roadmaster or Caprice that runs strong. Maybe even a Panther Ford. Cant do it with a Mustang or Camaro . We knew of a guy with a 85 Diplomat with a supercharger on it that could kick some ass but because you dont see many anymore BOOM could be trouble.

Some of the real sleepers back in the day were the family rides that dad had ordered up with a large V8.........a four door grocery getter or even a station wagon.

Also a good friend of mine had one of those Buick V6's (64 I think) with a three on the tree that really kicked ass.

When I was a kid one of my buddies had a triple black 69/70, it was flawless and bad to the bone. The funny part is his name was Victor Balls, what's even funnier is he didn't have any, his dad did all the work.

Does it have to be a drag car? My 66 is more would be corner carver with full aftermarket tubular front suspension with rod ends. No rubber bushings any place. On another forum, there's a post for member's cars. I never thought of it as anything more than a POS but a few said my 66 has that sleeper look to it. I'm gathering parts for my new to me GT40P motor Sorry for the crappy cell phone photo. The car is a blast to drive.

I love sleepy cars, Pontiacs lend themselves to being sleepers. It looks like a 326 but is actually a 489. It's relatively well known that 12s are easy, so it has to be faster than that or look like the ultimate pos. The 68 is my latest attempt at a sleeper, lightened extensively, no race gas smell, iron heads, and it will look mostly stock and very ratty. Might do some kid stuff like stickers or AutoZone crap to add to the image. Exhaust leaks and loud mufflers, or quiet and no leaks are the only way to go. Sound tame or like a piece of shit.

Look very stock, make silly power, get it to hook with small tires. Ugly and ratty full on clown shoes, or way too nice like a full resto.

There was a thread years ago, had a ratty looking red Fox body Mustang. That little sucker was packed full of surprises. I think the general theme was sleepers. If i can find it again, I'll post it. There was some good stuff in there.

The Mustang and the Buick are pretty badass. There's tons more threads and blog articles. I'll throw some more links up as I get around to it. We like sleepers here. Welcome aboard nonhog, I think you'll fit in just fine.

                            Here's a few teaser pics.

As soon as saw the topic I thought of that mustang...so much stinking win....Didn't we have the owner of that 4 door skylark that pulls the wheels as a member...that car is freaking killer...
