    So, what's Operation 1420?

My goal is to run mid 14's and get 20+mpg on the highway with the 4000lbs of love that is my 2002 P71 CV.

    A little personal background:

On May 21 I bought a 2002 Crown Vic Police Interceptor for $1600. I've been looking for a project car since I was about 12 (lol) but finally at 23, I'm in a stable enough position to officially own my first car. I've "had" other projects and daily drivers before through working with my dad including a 1972 Mach 1 and a 1971 Monte Carlo but I left that all behind. To say the least, my father was not the nicest person to me or my family so he's no longer a part of my life.

I've had a lot of ups and downs over the last few years and I've been dreaming of my first car since I was a little kid. I earned my education as a mechanical engineering technologist in college and that qualification is supporting me while I earn my university engineering degree. I've sacrificed a lot and through working part-time over the last 4 years I've finally gotten to this point and I'm proud to say that I've earned it all on my own.

Like many of you BS'ers I'm working with a tight budget and I had high hopes for my first car. I finally distilled my options down to a Ranger pickup. I really wanted to get a C4 'Vette or a P71 Crown Vic but those cars are usually fetching $3500+ around Montreal. After dealing with a bunch of deadbeat Ranger sellers this 2002 P71 popped up for $1700.

I saw the car on Thursday May 20, and by Friday afternoon I was the new owner, insured and cruising. I bought it for $1600 given that it had a few minor fixes to be done but it had all of the great P71 stuff.

    The nitty-gritty:

    Specs: 2002 P71
    -4.6L SOHC(235hp/280lb-ft in stock trim)
    -168 000 kms (100 000 mi) when purchased
-Power Improved (PI) heads and intake
    -Dual exhaust
    -4R70W trans with cooler
    -oil cooler
    -4 wheel disc brakes
    -3.27 Traction-Lok diff

Repairs done in my first two weeks of ownership:
-new plugs ("check engine" light went off after)
    -new air filter
    -new driveshaft u-joints
    -new driver's side tie-rod end
    -alignment
-put on two used tires on the rear to replace the bald Winters that were on there :P
-all the fluids are clean, so I've just topped them up
-installed a cheap stereo head unit

    Work to be done:
    -weld up exhaust leak
-redo the brakes (probably at the end of summer)
-"air bag" idiot light is on
-paint job; the paint is peeling off but thankfully there is ZERO rust anywhere due to the body being GALVANIZED lmao (take that Montreal winters!!!!! ;D)

I also bought another set of 16" steelies (got two good used tires), a set of dog dish caps and the Police Interceptor trunk badge.

FYI, dumpster diving pays off: I found a decent set of 17" Pirelli tires abandoned in an alley and I traded them for a good set of 16" winter tires ;D

The car runs like a champ and I've put nearly 900 kms on it in two weeks, lol. I work at different sites, some with a decent drive - I haven't found the CV to be terrible on gas, I've been averaging 17mpg (14L/100km) with a 50/50 mix of highway and city driving. I expect my mileage to improve because I have had a little trouble in keeping the right pedal off of the floor, lmao.

I'll post up some more pics in a few days - work is keeping me quite busy at the moment.

Here you can see my luxurious work area, also known as the street ;D

Getting ready to change my plugs

Lots of dirt in the threads, I threaded the old plugs in and out a few times until the dirt was gone before I installed the new ones.

Gapping in the street! I don't own a feeler gauge so used my caliper.

For those of you who also grew up with Sesame Street: "Biiiiiiiiiiig... smaaaaaaaaaaaaall" or "One of these things is not like the other".... Victoria feels a little out of place in her parking spot :D

Nice work - probably not a bad idea to think about replacing the O2 sensors eventually.

Does it burn oil? Some of those had a bad habit of collecting crude in the EGR passages under the throttle body.... pretty simple fix, pull the throttle body, clean out the passages with a pick / old screwdriver etc, put on a new TB gasket - reassemble -- no more oil smoke when you step on the go pedal.
There's always something new to learn.

Thanks for the tips, John. I hadn't thought about the O2 sensors, I'll add that to the long term maintenance list. As for the TB, the car hasn't taken any oil over 900kms (~560mi), but I think I'll clean it as you described for good measure anyways.

I got the new u-joints in on Wednesday this week but I only got to go for a decent drive today. Now I have no fear of dirty vibrations from dead u-j's... I did my first legit burnout with this car. The Traction-Lok is working plenty fine - I promise pics next time ;)

Nothing exciting in the pic below but here's my balcony/storage area. As I mentioned before, I traded some abandoned 17" tires for 4 decent winter tires, well here they are. I bought a second set of steelies and tires - the best 2 of the 4 ended up on the car, and the 3rd best is in the trunk as a spare. I now have 3 finished tires to play with - so I promise some burnout pics and possibly some action from our local drifting meets :D.

      As for the bikes...
I'm in the middle of restoring a 3-speed hub bike from the 60's and I recently picked up that 1983 Team Murray BMX off Craigslist. I also have a 49cc mini-chopper but it's presently in a buddy's garage.

More pics and details in the coming days

Darren, if your car doesn't have the lug nuts with the ring for the snap-on center caps, the Dorman part# is 611-197, Carquest and NAPA can get them. They're alittle pricey at $2.93 each but, its the only way to mount the center cap.

I suggest painting the wheels white to match the car, when I did that with the Intercepter wheels on my 70, everyone thought I bought different wheels.

FYI, 05-up 17" Mustang wheels fit nice on P71's ;)

Can't wait for the drift pictures!

Thanks for the tip on lug nuts. I have a set of them now, but I may buy a new set eventually because they're rather corroded.

As for painting the wheels, I actually thought of your Mustang! ;) I'm thinking white steelies with the chrome center caps would look cool like on your car.

17" wheels would be a future upgrade (no cash for new tires now) but I've definitely grown a liking to some of the 05+ Ford Racing wheels, hmmm :D

I'm working from home this weekend plus there's rain in the forecast for today AND tomorrow so that likely means that the strip and other tracks will be closed. I'm aiming for action next weekend! ;D

Alright, I made it to Napierville Dragway last night for the CV's first passes down the 1/4 mile.

I made 5 passes, the best 3 time slips are below. Best ET was 15.907 s @ 88.23 mph (204 ft. elevation). I'm fairly satisfied with that given the age and mileage of the car.

Also, it was my first time running on the 1/4 mile in the driver's seat (I've rode shotgun before). I had a freakin' blast romping around with Victoria ;)

... anyways, *whisper* 75hp shot of dry N2O *whisper*, WHAT?! Who said that??? lmao

...we'll see if my wallet can afford that later on this summer :D

Sorry about the lack of action shots, it got dark early and my buddy was kind enough to snap these pics on my first two runs.

              Re: Operation 1420: 2002 P71 Crown Vic

I also went for an impromptu cruise after the strip last night - downtown Montreal is buzzing with F1 activity for tomorrow's Canadian Grand Prix. I had a blast cruising this scruffy big boat amongst all the fancy Aston Martins, Bentleys, Ferrari's and Lambo's. I was rolling like everyone else in traffic but the windows were down with 50's oldies coming through the speakers. It felt almost like I was in American Graffiti, well at least as close as I'll get to 1962 - I'm 23 years old :P

However, I discovered some issues with the shifter and ignition switch. Both are quite worn and require some serious fiddling before the car can start - gotta fix those ASAP... along with the sagging driver's door hinges.

Well, that's all for now folks!

My 95 9c1 (caprice police package)

                runs 14.00's @ 98mph. and gets 25mpg hiway.

130k mile lt1. headers, no cats, x pipe and magnaflows. 3600 stall yank converter and 3.73's.
                on a 17in m/t drag radial it went a best of 1.76 60ft 14.00 @ 98mph.

                car weighs 4430 race weight.

That sounds like a mighty fine recipe. That is some pretty awesome performance considering the weight of the 9C1 (I'm probably not too far off). If you've got some pics or video of that beast, please share!

I plan to do similar upgrades but for now I'll have to wait until I can afford it. I think my first real performance investment will be in a set of long tube headers, high flow cats, a full 2.25" exhaust system with X or H pipe and a pair of decent mufflers (I liked the Magnaflow's on my previous project Monte Carlo but I'd give any quality product a shot).

I'm a little hesitant to run deeper gears because of the potential impact on fuel economy. However, as I've gone through a few complete fill ups I'm starting to notice that this car barely seems to care about my driving style. So 3.73's could be a possibility later on - perhaps paired with some new cams to extend the RPM range. ;D

I think the stock torque converter is really holding back the car. The 4.6 2V pulls much harder higher up in the RPM range than down low- it's really lazy off idle. What I find weird too is the inconsistency when I floor the car from a standing start - sometimes it launches softly (ran nearly the same ET and mph twice) or it launches harder with a little tire chirp (like on my best pass).

I would suggest you join a p71 message board. I'm sure those guys will be more than helpful in getting you to your goal.

                    Best of luck with her!

I've signed up at crownvic.net and I've been reading up on other Crown Vic an P71 websites. Those websites are great for tech details specific to the CVs and P71s. However, in terms of everything else - well, BS will always be my home-base. 8)

Some years back, I had a 5.4 in one.
It requires a hood bulge, or scoop.

I can't seem to get Victoria turned on, even after I played with stuff under her dash :-*

Above I mentioned that I was having trouble getting the car to start due to what I thought was a loose ignition switch and or shifter (not fully engaged in Park). However, it looks like the neutral safety switch is the culprit because the car won't start even in Neutral.

Anyways, I'll have to wait until next weekend to look into it. In the meantime I've ordered a push-button "start" switch to get the car going ASAP. I also plan on picking up a jack and stands off of an online classified so I can adjust the neutral safety switch on the trans.

I also ordered a new set of door hinge pins because the sagging driver's door is starting to annoy me - I hate having to slam the door to close it.

Badass! That must have been a ton of fun to drive. It seems a few people are into that swap. I bought parts off of a guy who did a 5.4 and 5 speed swap into his '04 P71. The factory truck cams are pooping on the party after ~4500 RPM so he swapped in the cams from the 4.6. He ran a 15.2 with the truck cams - it should be a lot better this time around.

It was quite hard on rear tires.
