Dumb question - if you pull the rocker and the pushrod - what is holding the lifter against the cam lobe?

Sorry to hear of your troubles - but happy to know you made the trip safely and were nice enough to take pictures for us.

That 7 cylinder thing brought back some memories.

In '78 I just swapped out my company car....we had
        Ford LTD's, for a new '79 model.

Had less than 1000 miles on it,drove to Syndey, NE when
        engine acted up.

Went to dealership......guy said I was running on 7 cylinders.
Would take three days to fix.....I said screw it......drove back
to Lincoln, NE, in a blizzard....on 7 cylinders.

Nothing besides gravity and the lifters weight. I may have to fish it out of the lifter valley. There is a nice big drain hole next to the #4 intake, which is the cylinder that had the broken rocker.

Another dumb question - if the lifter came out of the bore - what happened to the oil pressure?

Not sure it did. I haven't taken the valve cover off yet to look. Oil pressure stayed right around 40 lbs the whole way home.

The rest of the lifters on that side would leak down and start clattering merrily away if the lifter popped out.

I'm glad you guys are enjoying this stuff.

In keeping with simple, inexpensive theme of this engine, I'm thinking of replacing the crappy rockers with these from Summit. Anyone have any experience with these. Stamped steel, extra long slot.

I've used the Summit brand rockers quite a bit (sbc), never a problem with them. The 350 that's on the stand will get a set too.
