Well, made some more progress today, but she's putting up a fight. Fordman's got a couple of war wounds, and I'm feeling some aches and pains.
New oil pump, pickup screen, ARP oil pump shaft, windage tray and oil pan are installed. Steering linkage is converted over to a manual steering setup, and back together. Funky traction bars and coil-over shocks are gone, and so is the tiny radiator.
The old saggy leaf springs are not gone. We couldn't get the front bolt out of the driver's side leaf spring. A lot of beating on it with a drift and a BFH did not work, and my reciprocating saw wasn't up to the task either. More violence may be required.
Also, the repro lower radiator saddle brackets don't fit, so I haven't got the big block radiator in yet either. I'll have to have a go at those tomorrow.

Got yourself a real nice car there! Many years ago a buddy of mine bought a 67, I think, coupe with a 390, 4 speed. I tuned it up once, what I PIA changing the plugs. I read a few years ago that some 390's can be poked out to std 428 size and that TRW was making std size pistons just for this reason. Anyway, good luck!TomOverdrive is overrated

Made some more progress today. Got the old leaf springs out and the new ones in. We had to cut the driver's side front bolt, but the passenger side one came out with no fuss at all. One of the old leaf springs was cracked straight through, so I'm glad I decided to go with new ones. It looks like I should have gone with Eaton's +1 or +2 springs though, because it's sitting nose high. I think we got the new spring plates swapped side-to-side, because the shock mount is at the wrong angle. Still, the car is getting a lot closer to hitting the street again, and I'm getting psyched about firing it up again.

Started taking apart one of the Holleys today. I think I may have spotted the source of one of the massive fuel leaks.
I also discovered that I don't have a 5/32 clutch head screwdriver for the metering plate, and the rebuild kits I bought a year ago are actually for 4100-series Holleys. GRRRR!!!! Anyone need one?
Really thinking hard about yanking the dual quad intake off and putting the Edelbrock Streetmaster on. At that point, I might as well swap the cam for something milder.

I think my clutch head screwdriver walked away at the drag strip one weekend, haven't seen it in years.
IF you have all the dual quad stuff and they just need rebuilt - stay the course and see what the engine acts like after the rebuilds....
If the car is still a PITA with the dual quads - and you have what you need to swap to a single - I sure wouldn't blame ya for doing it.There's always something new to learn.

I stopped by Kitt's Tools on 8-Mile, they had the clutch head screwdrivers for $1. I picked up an extra one if you want it.
Most of my clutch parts arrived today, but apparently the pressure plate is back-ordered. D'oh!
I think I'll have another go at getting rebuild kits and stick with the dual quads for now. Trying to keep the focus on getting it running, safe and drivable, and then moving on to resurrecting the Mach 1.

By now you know those broken parts you found under the valve cover used to retain the rocker on the end of the shaft.
I had a dual quad FE setup back in the day. Used a non-cross bo;t 427 block, yes they exsit, with a 428 crank and 427 rods and aftermarket pistons and you get a 454. Surprised the hell out of some people back then.
Use the bue Holley float bowl and carb plate gaskets and with the stiffer vacuum springs and you can have a nice running cool looking engine. You'll want to get familiar with guys on www.FEPower.net if you aren't already and there are othe FE specific sites as well.

I used to go on some of the FE forums, but it's been a while. I spent a lot of time there and on the 428 Cobra Jet site when I was figuring out what parts I needed to buy for my '69 Mach 1 project. It was running dual quads on the 428 SCJ when it was blown up street racing in the '70s and then parked until I got it. The guy threw out a lot of hard to find stuff and blew up the rest.
