Re: Bill's Project 73 Monte Carlo.

Sounds like a great cam choice. What about those lifters with the holes EDM'd into the face to prevent oil issues?
There's always something new to learn.

Re: Bill's Project 73 Monte Carlo.

I ordered this cam. It's small, but we don't have to upgrade any of the rest of the engine for it run well. Hopefully, it will give him a little more oomph and improved mpg over the stocker cam. I got the cam, lifters, and a Cloyes timing chain for what just a cam would cost. I found Egge makes a repro cam for the L82 at $125, but I got all three for the same price at Summit.

Seeing how the stock cam specs are: 194/202 dur @ .050 and 390/410 lift. Anything would be an improvement.

Re: Bill's Project 73 Monte Carlo.

        Great project!!
The only thing I will mention is while I think the cam is a great pick.... Is it too much for this application?
I think its a great mild cam and you're smart to choose it, but isn't this an older gentlemans car that he wants to keep stock? (heck he didn't want to put wider tires on it if I remember right...) I assume he never beats on it, so would the smaller 204/214 cam be a better choice? I doubt that the 214/224 will be radical, but it should have a slight lope to the idle and be a touch grumpier on the cold start. Obviously if you get the tune dead on, I don't think any of these things will be a big problem. Just wondering if it is going to fit his needs as well as a milder torque cam would? I would hate for you to get it all together and have him not really like it.
But if he's into it and wants it, thats a different story all together!

        Just asking!

Whoops. I put out the wrong one. It's the next step down I ordered.

You're right, the we want to keep near stock as possible.

            Great cam for this application!
The 204/214 should idle like stock, get the same if not better gas mileage and pull hard with stock gears and converter.

Should run great! I had a similar sized cam in a TBI 350 and it ran very strong for such a mild cam.

Although....the 214/224 with a set of headers and a cheap B&M shift kit could be a lot of fun......

Bill decided to go on the larger cam. He wants a bit of a lope and rumble. He's been hanging with Carl and me too long. That's what he got by UPS today.

The Cloyes timing chain has the three way crank gear. I'm wondering if I should advance it 4*. I'm used to Comp's who grinds most of theirs with 4 degrees advanced. I guess I'll have to talk to Summit tech dept.

Hmmmm.....interesting!! Next thing you know he'll have 15x8 rears with 275's, headers and a shift kit. Then its time for a converter and gears..... Don't forget to recurve the distributor!

I'm glad he decided to have a little fun, although I still think the 204/214 cam might have been a better choice for his daily driver.

If he isn't going to rev it much you could probably get by with stock valve springs. Or are you going to change them anyway?

I thought even summit cams are ground 4* advanced? Did you get a chance to check out the cam card?

We may end up there. He just came by and said how much he likes my Caprice's 454 power. He's also driven Carl's 67 Chevelle with it's 450 hp 383. He says he doesn't like how loud that car is, though. 3" pipes and two chamber Flows. Everyone in the neighborhood knows when Carl comes and goes.

                    Cool!!
When are you going to have a chance to stick it all back together?
You're really getting this car straight!
I'm already building this thing on the cheap in my head.....

                    What are the factory gears?

Nice to hear it gets driven often. All of the drivers around me have long turned to rust dust..... The only ones left are cherished and stored, and there is nothing wrong with that either.

I will be sticking it back together this weekend. Bill has already cleaned and painted everything I took off.

It's got either 2.73's or 3.08's, no posi.

It's Bill's only car. He drives it daily. After his '82 Cutlass was wasted in an accident; we tried to find him something safe, with a V8, cheap to own, insure, fix; and one that is exempt for Cali's emissions tests. We trashed canned the AIR pump, pulled the smog trees off the manifolds and remove most of the AC system. Bill hates AC and living in West LA, it doesn't get hot very often. We got it for $2000. It has swivel buckets, floor shift, pwer windows, and rallys. It's a nice car and we could sell it for $5000 easy.

Factory gearing is 2.73:1. I see dual exhaust has already been added, so the car should move out pretty well, and get great gas mileage (18 mpg) at a steady 75 mph.

The L48 350 comes with duals. My 73 Impala had the same engine and factory duals.

Really? I thought they were separate options. I have this exact engine and factory dual exhausts in two of my 73 Montes, and it has a true double hump cross member, which your friend's car doesn't seem to have, if I'm looking at the pictures correctly (they're taken at an angle, so maybe I'm not seeing it correctly, but the left exhaust pipe looks to be hanging much lower than the right one). My exhaust pipes are almost dead even. But maybe it's just the camera angle that seems to make your friend's cross member look like a single hump.

You can see the dual exhaust type cross member here. Yes, that left side pipe hangs low. It's a cheap set up. Hardly any bends. The car came that way.

Yes, I saw that picture and it's really hard to see the left hump because of the angle.
