I expect 7-8 mpg is about right unless I can duck the emissions problem and add efi, which I bet gets me to 10 mpg in this application. But in CA it's illegal to actually add aftermarket equipment that reduces emissions and increases mileage.

We figure this truck will probably never make it out of the state other than Bonneville. It's for local trips to the drags, to Willow springs, to the desert, and El Mirage. On those trips, any gas truck and trailer gets 10 mpg at best with a trailer. Even if the '82 gets 5 mpg, it's worth it for the convenience of having EVERYTHING with us.

We're not slaves to practicality here, anyway.
It is a cool truck, I'm glad you got one with four wheel drive and now you can haul extra help without the expense of another vehicle. I'm sure you could get whatever the exemption it is to put a later 454 in there with fuel injection. Yeah, you will have to run smog stuff for the test, which kills gas millage, but just take it off once you pass smog to get the gas millage back.

Even more reason not to want to live in California, even if I get stationed there I'm keeping my Texas plates, licence, and residency.
According to California law; you have to get Cali plates and license within thirty days of setting up permanent residency. I've seen Air Force guys argue with cops that they live on base and don't need to change their plates. The state says military personnel are not exempt. My brother in law kept all his cars licensed in Idaho for years. No one ever bothered him. An OSI badge has it's advantages.

Back on subject: I agree that this truck is ripe for a diesel conversion and higher gears. I'm not sure the ramifications of changing a gas truck to diesel when it comes to the smog police.
Nonresident Military Personnel Operating a Vehicle in California

Nonresident military personnel, and both military or civilian members of NATO who are not citizens of the United States are permitted to operate a vehicle in this state with valid license plates from either:

      * the individual's home state or country or
      * the state or country where the individual was regularly assigned and stationed when the license plates were issued, if the following requirements are met:
      1. The license plates displayed on the vehicle are valid plates issued by a foreign jurisdiction.
      2. The vehicle registration and license plates are issued to the military person or spouse of the military person.
      3. The vehicle registration and license plates are issued by the foreign jurisdiction where the military person was last regularly assigned and stationed for duty by military orders or a jurisdiction claimed by the nonresident military person as the permanent state of residence.
      4. If the vehicle is a motor vehicle, the owner or driver has insurance.
Laws change. Looks like this one did. Not surprising. The feds don't like states telling what their military personnel has to do. The law was idiotic at best because all it proved was Cali desperately wanted a couple extra bucks from registration and DL's. I wonder if this law was changed about the same time Gray Davis thought he could get illegals to come to the DMV to driver's licenses.

This is a good point. We can now take me, Chad, and two or three AV Kids in one truck. It used to be me and Chad in my single-cab Dodge and the AV Kids in one or two extra vehicles.

Leave the shell on it. Then have a camo painting party. Maybe put a fake 50mm cannon or machine gun on top of the shell!

I'm curious what wheels you're thinking of running...will it still be a dually when it has 35s on it? or are you going single in back?

19.5s off a P30 box van with P-metric skinnies from Bridgestone. It will still be dual rears. You run a 1/2-inch spacer between the wheels so the tires don't touch each other.

You guys better be careful crossing threads like that. Who knows what sort of evil could come from it.

I didn't know we were giving opinions. I was stating facts.
