I know Comp, Crower and Jesel all have belt drives, what are some of the others and which do you feel is the best??

Why do Nascar's use belt drives??Originally posted by Tazracingfine, chainOriginally posted by 88 Dippyif you use knock sensors with the coil on plug the gear noise mess with the readings.
Because Chains don't last the whole race. ;)Comment

Re: Belt Drives, which is best??
I don't think it's because a chain wouldn't last an entire race, I mean, they do last for years on street engines. An idling engine places more strain on a chain then an engine at higher rpm I would guess.
A belt is more likely to keep it's tolerances better during the race and probably also reduces valvetrain harmonics greatly in a high rpm engine.
I think that/those are the main reasons they're used in Nascar.
I've got a serpentine beltdrive on my lathe. Does that count aswell? :D

Re: Belt Drives, which is best??
BBM this is right off Jesel's website.
And I'm not saying a chain will always fail, I mean we all know they can go for 10's if not 100's of thousands of miles, but that is the reason they started using them in Nascar......It?s safe to say that JESEL is the originator of the modern racing belt drive system. Like most JESEL valvetrain components its belt drive was born out of necessity as NASCAR racers were experiencing frequent timing chain failures in 500-mile races.Comment

You have to love a guy that just likes to post even if he has no clue......Originally posted by Tazracingto not break cams, also, t.c. you got the money to change out the belt every 1000 mile, nascar teams have that money, cost isn't an issue,, also your not going to be running 5000-9000rpm for 95% of that 1000 milesOriginally posted by TubbedCamaroWhy do Nascar's use belt drives??Originally posted by Tazracingfine, chainOriginally posted by 88 Dippyif you use knock sensors with the coil on plug the gear noise mess with the readings.

What does a Toyota, Honda, a 2.3 Ford use that goes 100,000 plus miles?
TC if you go Jessel get the white belt you wont ever have to change it.
Valve train harmonics can happen at any RPM unless you have a spin tron you wont know at what range yours are, this same thing can happen to valve springs. They can crystallize and snap like glass breaking. This is why I run a belt on my stuff for Drag Week Preventing the issue is a lot cheaper than repairing it after and buying a belt then2007 SBN/A Drag Week Winner & First only SBN/A Car in the 9's Till 2012

Re: Belt Drives, which is best??
what would coils-on-plug have to do with this? knock sensors usually get useless the minute you put headers on the car, unless it's an LS engine (the knock sensors remain very useful on these engines up into very high power levels).Originally posted by 88 Dippyif you use knock sensors with the coil on plug the gear noise mess with the readings.www.realtuners.com - catch the RealTuners Radio Podcast on Youtube, Facebook, iTunes, and anywhere else podcasts are distributed!Comment

ya I don't know .. got it..
talk to me when your belt has 50k on it never mind 100k..
oem's used it because.. WAIT FOR IT WAIT FOR IT IT'S CHEAPER THAN A LONG CHAIN (OHC) and all the parts to control the long lenth.. (BUT THEY ONLY LAST 1000 MILES RIGHT? :
read up BUDDY . oem's used belt for cost . nothing more..
1100.oo+ for a retro fix belt kit , isn't needed on 98% of the street cars they are on..
I'll bet not backing off the rockers while car sits idle, does more harm and renders valve springs junk, way before use'n a CHAIN does hahahahaha
yup I don't know sssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!ttttttttttttttt ttttt ,, This is the only true statement made by this poster
p.s. 95% of the drag cars/street cars with a belt system use it for timing changes, (insert, stacy davids laugh here)

Re: Belt Drives, which is best??
Mark I've never liked chains and that is why I have gear drives in both the 406 and the 454. But for this application I feel a belt drive is the way to go. I mean if it's good enough for Nascar it's definitely good enough for me. Also who says I'm paying retail prices for this stuff?? I'm thinking a good used belt drive is just as good especially with a new belt. ;) Same goes for the damper, ATI's are rebuildable, kit costs like $10, so a good used one should do just as good as a new one.Originally posted by Tazracinghahahahahahaha

Re: Belt Drives, which is best??
I have never had a spring lose pressure sitting, not even from high lifts anymore, its the speed at which it opens that kills them, time to grow up. Reading is not doing.

If you had ever really worked on a jessel you would know you back the bolt off and tilt the gear slide one belt off and the next on.Originally posted by Tazracingt.c. whats the r 'n' r kit cost for your belt drive, the gaskets and seals

Re: Belt Drives, which is best??
The seals have nothing to do with changing a belt. Try to find a topic you know somthing about, it will be hard, but try PLEASEOriginally posted by Tazracingreally, use system and you'd use the old seals?Originally posted by JeffMcKCIf you had ever really worked on a jessel you would know you back the bolt off and tilt the gear slide one belt off and the next on.Originally posted by Tazracingt.c. whats the r 'n' r kit cost for your belt drive, the gaskets and seals

unless you run a cover(pointless if you added it for timing changes ) the road dust, dirt gets in the belt and gears..
