  • Rebuilding an AOD, learning to fish, rebuilder referral in SoCal

Somewhere between my weekend of auto-x and road course fun at the Run to the Coast a month or so a go and last weekend's six laps at Famoso my trans seems to be expiiring. The symptoms are some erratic shifting especially during the burn out and as of Saturday, getting hot. 200* just putting around in the cool eraly morning weather going to Donut Derelicts.

I have a Lentech AOD which has been bullet proof for five years but I know it needs to be refreshed at a minimum. I talked to Lentech and on top of the $900 refresh they would charge it will run $700 to get the thing back and forth to Ontario, Canada. As a more reasonable alternative they suggested finding a really competant local shop that can do the refresh work. Lentech will specify the parts and sell me/them anyhting special we may need.

I rebuilt a few automatics, a C4 and C6 decades ago but I lack special tools and don't want to screw it up especially this close to DW 12. Ideally i'd like to find a place or someone that would let me look over their shoulder while the work is done so I can learn how to do it myself or at least be better informed. This won't be modifications, they've already been done, just a high performance rebuild. (I hope)

Any one here on Bang Shift have anyone to recommend here in SoCal?

I've put AOD together. Dont need anything you cant get at lowes or harbor freight.

Did they mention what they thought might be causing the problem?

echo - is is slipping? I can't think of another reason for it to be heating up. Maybe a clutch pack update, check the accumulator piston / spring for 1-2?

The current bet is the forward clutch pack. I tlaked John McGann of Car Craft today and he recommended Leo Glassbrenner of Remac Transmissions. Leo is a well known NHRA Stock and Super Stock racer and builds racing trans fpor all brands so this will be cake and I'll get to involved with an expert. I will learn to do this myself but I don't want experiment on this go around as time is getting tight and I need track time not down time.

Thanks guys. I'll post pictures tomorrow and in the project thread.
