  • Holley carb Question

I have a Holley 750 v/s (model 3310-4). The carb is in good rebuildable shape, but going to be too much carb for this painfully stock 302 going together for my Mustang. What parts do you have to change to make this carb a 650?

Main body, base plate. But, since this base plate is different from a 4160 600; I doubt that will work. Those two parts alone new is more than half the cost of a new 650 vac sec. Not likely to work right anyways.

Sell it and buy a 650.

I agree - sell it. You shouldn't have much trouble selling it. A lot of people think they need a 750.

Painfully stock may even like a 600 better than a 650.

Call up Speedjunkie in Indy (Richard) tell him you're a BS'er - he has piles of carbs and can set one up right for you. He'll probably work out a trade with ya.

Thanks everyone. Kinda thought that might be the case. When I say painfully stock, I mean that it will have headers, a stock HO roller cam, stock heads, stock aluminum manifold. I also want versatility with this thing so that I can upgrade the rest of the combo later without having to have a bunch of carbs laying around. That's why I was shooting for 650.

with stock EFI I ran 13.15 in a fox with a 5 speed and 3.55 gears, still got over 20mpg on the highway with the air on.

              E7 heads?

Vac sec gives you options without over fueling. Talk to Richard - he's really good with carbs!

I wish I had E7 heads. Phase 1 of this build is getting the car on the road with the junk I have laying around. These heads are D8. Pretty much the same as an E7, but with a 67ish cc chamber. They will get me on the road just fine until I can save up for my Phase 3 mechanicals. (phase 2 is making the car pretty and more comfortable)

When I get the money saved up for a carb, I will contact Speedjunkee. Got a few more big ticket items to save for.

I wish you lived closer, I have a growing pile of E7's , not worth the cost of shipping.

My thought was buy a 600 and keep the 750 for phase 7, the big block.

I see a lot on CL right now for around 100.00 - I've read good things about BG Demon 600 or 650 on stock-ish 302's, but on a really mild one (5000 rpm peak) I would be really tempted to put a 2 barrel on it. They need all the help with torque / throttle response they can get.

I have picked up at least two 600 edelbrocks for $25! Rebuild kits for any four barrel are around $45.

Edelbrocks are just fine for a mild street engine - Monk even likes them on his dual quad monster 409!

IMO ... the edelbrocks are more hassle free out of the box, especially on stock stuff.

John hooked me up with the last Edelbrock I had. Had to rebuild it after all the bondo dust floating around in the garage clogged it up. Ran good. Couldn't believe how off the stock settings were from the rebuild instructions. Ran good and knocked down 23 mpg on my last mild 302 with a 5 speed and 2.80 gear. I also like the Edelbrocks. Just thinking about getting familiar with the Holley carbs for phase 2 or 3. Anybody wanna trade a 750 Holley for a 600 Holley/ Edelbrock?

Here's a nice carb http://www.ebay.com/itm/HOLLEY-CARBU...c8c1ca&vxp=mtr One of my favorite carbs. Built by Holley for Ford but not really a Holley. This is a great running carb, it has annular primary boosters that give great throttle response and fuel economy, I use to get over 25 MPG doing 80 MPH in my 85, 5.0 Mustang with the AC on. The one on my Mustang had 4 corner idle mixture as well.

The down side is almost nothing interchanges with a Holley other then jets and the rear metering block. Not even the float bowls interchange. I did a few minor tweaks on mine and it was a great carb! It's a Motorcraft 4180, not a Holley 4180.

I'm running an Edelbrock 600 CFM. Sweet running street carb but the jet kit is a must. I think it was HRM that tested a bunch of 750 CFM carbs and guess what, they all basically made exactly the same power, name didn't matter. The Edelbrock 750 made as much power as a 750 Holley.

Hey - didn't we trade your 750 for my 600? That means I still have a 750 Edel. Huh - I loose track of such things.

I don't think I have a 750 holley at the moment, I'm sure I have pieces parts that I could more or less make one out of - but it would end up being more of a project than either of us has time for I'm guessing.

Keep an eye out - when I was shopping for 600 edels for the dual quad 302 intake - I found one for $20 and one for $25 - both needed rebuilt - and neither have run yet, so I don't know what the results will be. The "tuning" kit is at least $60 new which sort of bites, but you gotta pay to play.
