'00 Stratus, 2.5 mitsu, auto trans. 3 times in 6 months on the interstate it downshifted for no apparent reason. The GF described it as "it just slammed on the brakes and the RPMs shot way up" "it threw me foreward like you slammed on the brakes". The problem is, I've never been in the car when it happened, and only have a woman's description of the event. Unfortunately (not really) I just moved a few weeks and no longer have a 30 mile highway drive every day to try and replicate the problem. From what I can tell it's downshifting, but It could be doing something completely different (I'm convinced it's dropping a gear or two). Anyone ever heard of this before? Could it be mechanical or is it the computer acting up? No codes are thrown and fluid looks good.
