I spent some time fooling with my "new" old truck today. I put a starter on the 283, poured some gas in the carb, hotwired it, and it fired right up. Doesn't smoke real bad...yet....but the PO said it smoked, so it probably does! I noticed when I was under the truck that the pass side muffler is covered with burned oil residue, which looks like it came from the road draft tube....hmmm...wonder if the baffle can is missing in the valley? (that's a joke that the old guys might get)

I took the front drums off. Interesting how some people do brake jobs....long shoes on the left side, short shoes on the right side of the truck.

I wonder if anyone can see these pics?

I used a 12" steel ruler to "measure" the drums, since they're supposed to be 12" ID. One side had about 1/4" gap between the end of the ruler and the drum! other side is only about 1/16" over.

Wait. You mean all the shoes aren't exactly the same? I thought all four shoes were the same.

Why are drum brakes so baffling to so many people?

Jim - I was just showing your truck to my boss - complaining about how rusty such a rig would be if it was even still in one piece around here.

It's hard to see in those pics, but the linings are longer on shoes in one pic. They should be longer on the shoes on the rear shoe on each brake.

Although on something like a 69 toyopet...who knows? Just make sure you pay attention to how it was before, the trick is to do one side at a time, and when you're done with that side, spend some time comparing them, make sure the same parts are on the front/back of each side (springs, shoe length, etc)
