what would it take to put an Lt1 T56 into my mustang?

i found an LT1 t56 for sale cheap on cl and i was wondering what it would take to put one in my mustang...if you actually can...since theyre a good bit stronger than t5's and i could run a bigger(numerically) rear gear with the 6th gear.

id need a bellhousing at least, but would i need a different clutch/flywheel? and if i do could i use a cable activated clutch so i dont have to hang a slave cyl? and would i need a different crossmember or could i get the stock one to work? if id need anything else, let me know

depending on the part number of the box it at min will need a input shaft and a bearing retainer (front cover) plus they aren't that much stronger. the ls1 box is but not the lt1 box. you are better off buying a used tko

As I'd rather drive a Chevy then push a Ford, you'd be doing a vast improvement to the mustang to just go with the chevy power.... you'll get to try something you never get to do in a Ford powered Ford.... drive it oh BBF... gonna get in on this?

I know this is gonna sound crazy, but why not just get a 351 out of a truck and spray it..

Grab one from a van and even the oil pan is correct for the mustang swap. Doesn't get much more plug-n-play than that...

needs a hood if you do that, might fit tight with k-frame spacers... I wouldn't spray anything with hyperpathetic pistons though. Or would I? Hmmm.

I think by the time you bought the 500.00 McLeod bellhousing you'll probably need and all the other crap you're going to have to rig, you could get a used Tremec... but I like your constant a.d.d. thinking. Grin.

my internet account was running low on funds, so I could only afford an F rather than an R (more lines) thus close enough

don't the mustangs get non-siamese "HO"?

why would you want to put a dragster engine in the unibody that is setup to go quite far with specifics in cooling and sustaining. Build what is in it first.. odds are 500hp and a 1200 pound chassis is gonna be scary enough.

sure its fun for a little while...defining your own...it all comes crashing down.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is a gear that breaks at it, changing the tranny.

I'd go back to 3 on the tree.

kick some ass with that one.

This thread certainly got off track quickly. The F-Body T56 can be put into a Mustang. D&D Motorsports has the setup for that swap as it does require a special bellhousing and small spacer. I run a hydraulic setup in my 71 but they sell cable linkage set-ups as well. McLeod has just introduced a combo cable/hydraulic unit that would work well.

It worked on my buddy's 428 Cobra Jet powered 66 Corvette.
