the entire working bit came as a unit..... and I did find out what the noise was.... the exhaust turbine hitting the housing (just slightly)

I don't think the oil leak was coming from the turbo.... the PCV valve had a lot of oil in it - don't know where it's coming from, probably blow-by.... ah well, it is an oil burner

Not one - but TWO hammers to work on the precision turbo? No wonder I never get anything done.

it does require the right tools

the larger one was required to get the old parts out (it was corroded in place)

so is it cheaper to replace the center section v/s the whole turbo?

I didn't spend a lot of time trying to track one down, I contacted Banks and asked who could rebuild it - I presume as they only suggested that I contact Turbo City, that replacing the entire unit would be more expensive.... but as we know about presumptions, they may or may not be accurate. That said, the housings are a Banks-cast, Banks-only item. The replacement part has Air Research part numbers on it, so it's not a Chinese knock-off - even so, the rebuild part cost really isn't out of line when compared to a Chinese turbo, yet this is an American made (stamped) unit so the quality should be better.

wow does it run better... quieter too

if you seriously want me to show do a how-to on the pump - let me know, I found one of my spare ones and I can do a photo montage of how to increase the fuel pressure (thus fuel flow) in a Standyne pump.

                Hey, SBG...

I was looking at your airbag setup... how does it ride?

And what brand is the lift kit? I remember somewhere back towards the beginning of this thread that you said it was 4" lift, and rode pretty stiff, but you had other smoother 4" kits on other stuff.

I'm working on my '74, and I'm super curious about which 4" kit will ride the smoothest. Front-end weight will be close with my BBC going in, but not quite the 750-ish-lbs of your diesel monstah.
Yes, I'm a CarJunkie... How many times would YOU rebuild the same engine before getting a crate motor?

softride (I don't think they're made anymore) rides the best - the more leaves the better - second, I'd say Rancho (but there are those who say I'm on crack for that opinion - so YMMV). The springs on it now are probably superlift - it rides like a 6" lift, but it didn't move at all when I put another 100# on the front with the winch.

The airbag does stiffen the ride, but I kept the 1/2 ton leaf springs when I swapped to 3/4 ton axles - so it rides better (this too is a matter of opinion). It rides awesome with my 2000 lb camper in the back, though

I never would have guessed the radiator would stay with the chassis

well, the diesel has blowby... so time to start considering how to fix it. It helps when you find a short block for $50.00

it's a 6.5 diesel from a 95 truck - so it's got the updated block stuff, and I'll put updated heads on it... the bottom end, I'm simply going to rering. Originally, I thought I'd have to bore it - but closer inspection tonight - it will be good enough to simply hone it.... it has almost zero ridge, and only surface rust in a couple cylinders. at worse it'll smoke a bit

waves goodbye to truck... another rig rescued and sent to a owner that will make me look like a hack in its upkeep compared to what he'll do...
