Ideally, I like to have the tread width be the same as the rim width. On lower profile tires, the look gets exaggerated, quick!
I didn't even like the look of the stock Corvette tire/wheel combo in the 70's, when they used an 8" rim with a relatively narrow tire. The only reason it worked, however, was because of the 70 aspect ratio.
'69 - '72 8" rim 205/70/15
'73 - '77 8" rim 215/70/15
Using that same Corvette chart I was looking at, the factory put a 315 on an 11" wheel ('96 GS coupe), and only recommended the size vary by one size larger or smaller.
