    Dick Trickle Kills Himself

Former NASCAR driver Dick Trickle is dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Lincoln County (N.C.) police.

At about noon on Thursday, the Lincoln County Communications Center received a call indicating that there would be a dead body at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Boger City, and it would be the speaker's. Return calls to the number went unanswered. Crews arriving at the scene found Trickle's body lying near his pickup truck.

Trickle ran in 303 races in the Sprint Cup series over the course of 24 years, finally retiring in 2002. His best year was 1989, where he notched six top-5s, including three third-place finishes, driving the #84 Miller High Life Buick. He ended that year ranked 15th, ahead of Michael Waltrip, Brett Bodine and Richard Petty, among others.

Look, we all know where the conversation about Mr. Trickle is headed. The guy's name was a punchline his entire career. But he was a hard-nosed racer in his day, and this is how we prefer to remember him best:

I remember that name... I watched nascar around the time of his career.

71 years old. About the same age group that I began learning from..
      a lot to change.

they used to smoke on kc135 refuelers.
the older I get myself, the less I have to say about suicide. I don't believe in it, but who I am to judge.
my first encounter was a guy I was going to go buddy system in the army.
he ended up in pain unstoppable.

I have not much to say at all.

Dang, that's sad news. Back in the day, you had Dave Marcis driving in wingtips and Dick Trickle with the cigarette lighter in the dashboard.

The drivers were colorful then, not so now.

        RIP Dick.

Yeah, I got to meet Dave at Wilmington. We were hiding behind the ECTA trailer at the same time, trying to stay out of the 35-degree wind. I'll bet he gets tired of folks coming up to him saying they were a fan, or that they have miniatures of his cars, etc. It doesn't end. Dave seemed to handle it real well, but I'd nearly get tired of that. Glad I'll never have that nice problem to have. A nearly constant barrage of folks - tourists, fans, whatever, who want the have their photo taken with you.

I hate to hear about Trickle, Marcis has made his way to the Ohio Mile.

Dave is one of the nicest guys on the planet and there was no problem with him at MAxton - don't know what the rumor mill is saying. As Russell said he's racing with us at Ohio and is treated with respect. I don't know if he's still driving in wingtips but I'm pretty sure Joe would prefer that he wore racing shoes!

And it's a darn shame that anyone's life get to a point that the best option seems to be to end it. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones.

Yeah, Dave's very nice guy indeed. And what they had when I was there looked just about as thrown-together as anything, the "hauler" the car, etc. Nothing glamorous. In the spirit of speed. From North Carolina and looking like it.

But I'm not kidding. I huddled behind the trailer for about 15 minutes a few feet from Dave before they called for the drivers' meeting and in that amount of time, I'm trying to think maybe 6 different people came up wanting to meet and greet Dave for whatever reason. And we were "hiding."

But anyhow, a thread about Dick Trickle. I messed up another thread as usual.

Some people decide to end their life they lived it, on their own terms. My close friend, Bill, did the same thing. He basically let himself die by starvation. He would've used a gun, but he didnt want his girlfriend tramatized. But, Bill chose that he was done with this life because his health was failing. He knew the difference between living and existing. I was upset at his choice, but I later realized my feelings were selfish. It was what I wanted and not what Bill wanted.
