Progress has been slow getting into my spare 250 because I have been traveling, and working hard to sell my house and buy another one. I did get to spend some time this weekend taking things apart. Getting close to the hard part now.
Here you can see the infamous head bolt bosses in the intake that get cut out when you make a "lump port" head:
This thing is just filthy. I didn't get a chance to give it a good powerwashing before I started, so I have been scraping and vacuuming along the way.
Looks ugly under the valve cover. But the head will either be totally replaced or rebuilt.
Drained the oil today. Hopefully will get to pulling the head soon.
As usual, don't really know what I am doing. But having a good time turning wrenches and getting dirty. If you see something I should know about, let me know!

The best way to learn is to just get in there and get dirty. That is usually the most fun part.
Don't feel bad,Pete,I don't have clue either ;D. Meanwhile,I've taken the '77 Block to the Machine-Shop & the Transmission to the Trans-Shop. I've also closed a deal with my Landlord to buy about a dozen Engines from him(He's slowly giving me a lot of His stuff...),including 3 Pontiac OHC 230's/and a 250. ~OO6.

Man, that is awesome. I saw a buddy this weekend who has a 66 LeMans Sprint edition with the OHC 230. Awesome car.
I haven't forgotten your very reasonable offer for that Clifford intake. I really am looking for the deep finned look of the Offy. And I would spend alot of time getting rid of the black powdercoating. Let me know if you score any good inline hot-rod parts with all those inline engines!

I still have my Clifford intake, too. The engine project looks like you're on the right track to me. You were lucky (from my experience) to find a non-integral head 250 to start with. The hardest part is getting that damn air injection rack off there - of course, if you're not reusing the exhaust manifold, you really don't need to.
006 - if you have a spare 250 short block, PM me and we'll chat. I plan to run the stock short block this year, but I want to build a full-on short block and transfer my good head for next year's mill. It would be nice to have a block to build while the current one is still in the car.
Hard to believe my last post on this thread was May last year, but let's just say alot happened since then. Long story short, I sold a house, bought a house, moved, and started a new job.
House stuff has had priority, including a garage makeover for the Chevelle (priorities aren't totally out of line.)

Anyway, catching up, I'm back on the spare 250. It now looks like this:
Pretty nasty inside, but the cylinder walls feel nice and smooth:
I know I need to make some marks on the distributor before I pull it, but how do you physically get it out? I figured it would just pull out, but it seems locked in there pretty tight. Maybe it's just frozen and needs some penetrating oil and muscle?

I'm a fan of the six as well - in fact - Dan's 292 was moved to my shop thanks to Dave and Seth - and just today I dropped the cylinder head and valve gear off to a machinist friend of mine for a once over. The plan for this is a mild 4 barrel intake and electronic dizzy hopefully with a split header - duals, and a nearly stock 200r4 behind it - with a 55 chevy rear axle behind that - all in the 54 sedan which currently has the stock anemic stove bolt in it and 3 on the tree.
This car is sweet!
The floor paint you used in your new garage - is that the stuff from home depot? Nicely done! garage looks great!

Thanks. I was talking to Dan way back about buying a Clifford intake from him. He has that sweet PES head. I haven't been able to come to terms with the price of a lump-ported head yet. But I'll have to figure out something soon. I'm glad you are sticking with the six in the 54. I remember that thread. Great project!
There was a freshly rebuilt 292 recently on my local CL for $750. I was tempted, but not sure it would clear the hood in a Chevelle. Plus the guy claimed $1k in head work alone but couldn't find any receipts and the intake bolt bosses were still there so I was a bit suspicious.
The floor is professionally installed. It is considerably better and way more expensive than what they sell in stores. I did a bunch of research and can give you the details if you are interested. I couldn't get it done before the movers came and the pro could. The accountant gave the ok so it was my major splurge.

Good to know
I painted a couple floors with sherwin williams industrial marine epoxy - what they use on a lot of factory floors, and it worked pretty well - but it doesn't have the nice look of your floor - just a plain solid color.
Some day I'll get my shop clean enough to paint the floor - until then - I'll just live with it.
If you have not picked up Santucci's I6 book - do so and read up, I still have plenty of reading to do...

I have it, and have read it several times. My needs right now are more basic. I need a good "how to rebuild an engine" book more than anything. There was a thread on here (the last version anyway) about books. I need to dig it up.
