I was wondering if a 51 series battery has enough juice and what it weighs compared to yours. IIRC, your battery really wasn't really oversized or big. It looks bigger up against the firewall I think than it really is.
    Escaped on a technicality.

Mine is the cheapest car battery that Walmart sells.

I haven't had any cranking problems for years....

I'm not that impressed with the CCA's of those batt's. That's half of a gel-battery.
But if your engine starts easily on a small (used) motorcycle battery you could hide it inside a gutted regular battery-case.

A guy in town bought an old race car 55, it had the engine relocated back about two feet, and the frame was swiss cheesed...but they didn't just drill holes, they cut big rectangles out of it with a torch. I don't think I'm going there

The cheap battery I have in it now is about 450 cca. 7.5 compression isn't that hard to crank over, you know. I wonder how a riding lawnmower battery would do? they're about half the size and cost of a car battery

I thought about it....but it kind of doesn't look right without the rear bumper.

whats that thing weigh? I would guess about 50lbs but then again, thats where you would want weight, no?

a small block would get you down lol!

I saw a fiberglass hood for a 55 a few months back on Craigslist...without gutting it, cutting holes and expensive aluminum parts I am at a loss....My first thought was inner fenders but you said you wanna keep those...and its a PITA to remove and then reinstall and then alighn them...

is there any excessive bracketry any where? I know its super simple but for example there were 4 big brackets holding the front bumber on my old truck, they weights a few pounds a piece but it would be fine with only 2...could you fab up some aluminum mount brackets to take the place of the OE ones for now?

There really isn't a lot of fat on the car, aside from having an iron head big block with a big heavy blower and two big heavy carbs, a big heavy TH400, and a big heavy 9" ford rearend. The rear bumper isn't very heavy, the brackets are small and light too.

I guess that's why real race cars have all the inner body support structures cut away, etc.
