Ask Jack Roush and "Maximum Bob" Lutz.

BTW, there's some serious gearheadism at the Reno Air Races http://www.airrace.org/indexJS.php

In this day and age of fly by wire....drive by wire....park by camera....and "traction" control to keep your lack of driving skill from killing someone.

HELL YES old war planes are cool. Those guys who flew them had balls.....brass ones....big ass cocnuts. Cables...hot hydraulic fluid...no computers....no climate control cabins...freezin your ass off...

OLD WARBIRDS are the HOT RODS of the skies.....Superchargers....Nitrous Oxide....High Octane fuel....and birth place of the HEMI.

Not to mention...they were all piston powered......and they supplied us with those cool light weight A-N fittings and hoses we all love so much. ;D

What I like about this place is the diversity, We have covered everything from T-buckets to pinball machines at some point. Old as well as new aiplanes are often a topic of converstaion here. I certainly feel they are "bangshifty" and a feature should..no...must be done on this open cockpit day...

                Yep. Love old planes.

There's a difference from cars, in that old aircraft are something I'll never own or work on. Perhaps a ride here-or-there...have ridden in a DC-3 and a Stearman...so i'ts more of a spectator thing. Dig the construction, mechanics of 'em.

Hey, a B-29(!) flew over this town recently. It must have been one (at altitude, it was a ways up)...jeez, I was freaking out. :D

edit: Wikepedia says there is one B-29 flying (I had heard "lots", but believed, none). The CAF has it but I can't find any info about recent flights. So...I may, or may not be right about seeing one. Neat pic: http://www.airplane-pictures.net/image110581.html

Re: Question of the Day: Are Old War Planes BangShifty?

we revolve around old planes to this day as a standard..

you lose that, you have a dainty car.

I joined the military just for planes, and they are old...717 by boeing, kc135 by military.

not comfortable in a single way, and had engines big enough to rip its own wings off...

but gained an understanding that feminist really has to step aside sometimes... for a long time. ???

The more I see solid states go away, the more the world may be using the old planes to defend themselves...and mankind as we know it.

Re: Question of the Day: Are Old War Planes BangShifty?

Here's you a cool side story....post WWII my tiny hometown of Chowchilla,Ca recieved a P-40 from the US Army Air Corp as an aviation training tool for the Vocational class. The plane sat at the local high school and trained students how to repair airplanes. By the time the 60's rolled around the class had no instructor. So the plane was sold to a local guy named Charles McDonnell....Charles towed the plane downtown and parked it behind his machine shop. There it sat til about 1978 when he sold it to Suzanne Parish. I was lucky enough to sit in it when i was 8yo ...about 1977.Here's the site telling few details about the plane.

Aside from old planes being uber cool don`t forget a lot of technology and skills now used by hot rodders were brought back by servicemen who no longer had the planes to work on and turned their attention to cars.
