When my Mom's mother died (early 1950s) Dad bought an old Army trailer (WWII surplus in those days), got a hitch installed on the car, and hauled furniture, tableware, linens, and much more back from Florida to Michigan. There were still bits of that in Mom's house when we cleaned it out a couple of years ago following her death. I prefer well-made stuff (though there's plenty of crap in our home) so we hope the kids will want some of it. Our little piece of immortality.

I have 2 pieces of furniture that have meaning , but truthfully only to me. One is a child size roll top desk and chair,it was my grandmothers when she was a child. It is about 130 years old,all oak and weighs a ton. The other is a set of Chinese stacking tables , now 60 years old. They belonged to,believe it or not, my Kindergarten teacher. She also took my dad in at 14 when my Grandmother kicked him out. I'm sure they came from Pier One in the late 50's. Because my wife and I traveled so much , wife in Air Force, I never had the stuff with us,it was always at my Moms so my kids never really grew up with this stuff so they dont understand the meaning to me.
My kids have both gone off and started their own lives in the Air Force so moving is a part of their lives and they don't want our "old" stuff anyway. They LOVE IKEA.

My wife bought all the baby furniture from IKEA. When I hear what others pay for a CRIB! I don't mind putting it together

I had never heard of, didn't know what IKEA was until they ran a news piece this week about how IKEA has a tendency to destroy relationships. Like, couples go there to get into big arguments and fights fall out with each other.

Of course the news story still didn't bother to describe describe what IKEA is, like they assumed everybody is supposed to already know, and I've learned more about IKEA instantly from this thread than I did from the news story, and I wasn't quite curious enough to Google IKEA and find out. Do they sell beer that you have to assemble? That would be a bummer, especially if I couldn't find my way out of the store with it.

I bet the most popular drinks are Strychnine, Arsenic, and Hemlock... for the guys drug in there. Number one plate is probably Pufferfish. I looked up Eurotrash in the Urban Dictionary and there was a picture of IKEA.

just kidding. I didn't look it up. If you're into that sorta thing, cool. It's not my cup of Cyanide, errr, Oleander Tea. None of my stuff will ever match, flea markets are too much fun.
