    440 vs. 426 hemi

stock vs. stock in the same car with the same gears and tires.

which one would be faster in the 1/4 and higher top speed?

hemmings says the 440 is faster and i've always thought it was the other way around

440 six pack cars were tested to be faster than the Hemi cars back in the day. But not by much.

Really, the 440 if left stock. Hemi's were detuned from the factory (distributor curve) because they were covered under warranty (believe it or not). The Hemi, obviously, had greater potential. The 440 however was much more streetable and held tune better - not as fussy. Probably a better choice for a car that was actually going to be driven. That said, my buddy Ronnie's Hemi was his daily driver and did fine with a bit of frequent tweaking.

Hemis made better race motors than they did stock motors. I have some old service material that suggests they weren't really suitable for normal driving, such as in winter etc.

hemi is wonderful eye candy , the 440 looks like a large sbc , but runs better on the street than hemis in like a stock form , I would set up a hemi for big revs where the heads start to work for ya

I certainly wouldn't go by that list.

              A well tuned L-S6 or Hemicuda(70),
on slicks should better that number easily.

For $200-K you guy'z can have your OWN '70 Hemi 'Cuda......Jack's playing with the idea of 'testing the market' again. For your $$$$,you get a Car which was never 'Hot-Rodded'(never had an aftermarket Gauge installed in or under it's Dash...),has two flat Tyres on it's passenger side, faded Torr Red Paint, origional Interior, two of it's origional Goodyear Polyglass front Tyres,Headlight Bulbs, ect. Car is an origional Column-shifted Torque-flite piece. All paperwork from new. 24-k origional miles. Plenty of extra/spare Parts including TWO EXTRA SETS of Carter AFB's(N.O.S.),with Throttle Linkages. Some newer parts like Gaskets,Engine Mounts, and Plugs,Wires, ect. It's a nice piece of shit, but NOT for 200-G's : :P. ~J/W-OO6.

I think he missed the boat there. Should have sold it 2 years ago. This one's completely restored, and they're asking $175K. One of many I've seen for sale lately.

I'd love to see some pictures, but unless my mega-millions ticket hits tonight, I think he's going to find the market is probably less than half what he's asking. I saw a project '70 Hemi Cuda on craigslist in San Francisco a while back, and it was on there for months.

Whoa, are you guys sniffing glue? 440's were pretty good, especially the sixpack, but none of the above would run with a stock Hemi car, stock for stock. No way, no how, it didn't happen that way. Hemi on average was worth about a second in the quarter over the same car with a 440.

One second quicker? So that means either the hemi was WAY underrated, or the 440 way WAY overrated, in advertised power. So which was it?

                            Yes, about a second quicker.

My understanding of the 426 vs 440 controversy boiled down to price....the horse power difference was small enough that it may not have been worth the extra 800 bones for a few ponies and a couple of 10ths.....
