When I hit the lottery (when I can remember to buy a ticket) I'll have the Snap-On truck back up to the shop and unload. I've never had a bad Snap-On tool (clean up your act - there's kinds on here!).

My Snap On man is usually one of the top sellers in the country. He says its because he does EXACTLY what Snap On says to do. He gives NO discounts, unless its an authorized special. He keeps his truck jammed full, he knows when you need something, you want it now. No goofy trading in of Craftsman tools. If you cannot get credit through Snap On for a toolbox, don't expect him to extend credit to you. He's been very successful for years. But its not unusual to see him still making stops at 8PM. I once called him, he was on vacation in Hawaii. He got a neighbor to unlock his truck and get me the tool I needed. It's alot of work.

Looking into getting a franchise and I want to get both sides of the situation. I have a friend who has been a Matco Dist. for 20+ yrs and is successful. I know it is a lot of work and I am way okay with that. I was hoping to hear horror stories if any and the pros and cons of the business.

                  Re: Tool Trucks?

Ya become a tool guy and get your money when you can. Even though most mechanics pay their bills, a lot of them are going to be trouble. Like with my last SnapOn guy, I quit my job and left before the day he was suppose to come around. I had about $1100 on the books with him, I was the good guy I called him let him know I quit and that I would catch up with him as soon as possible. So a few days later I met him at the shop and paid him off in full, that way he didn't have to keep meeting up with me. He was so happy I paid him off that he gave me free stuff, you see a lot of times it doesn't go down like that and like he said you just end up eating hundreds if not thousands of dollars. There's a reason those tools are so expensive. Anyway realize you will not only be a tool guy but a bill collector as well.

snap never gives deals , just great tools
I would not go into tool selling - too many deadbeats , broke mechanics and harbor freight and e bay are killing the business
especially with used snap on stuff

                      Re: Tool Trucks?

Some people have the mentality for it and some do not. There are a lot of mechanics that will quit and stiff you. You have to be wiling to write off your losses. You need to learn to be a good judge of people and how far you are willing to extend credit to them. Make sure that you research the company before you jump in. There are lots of unhappy ex-tool guy's. Try to find a area that has not been screwed over by the last tool guy from the company that you join.

                        Ditto..LOL

Probably like any other business...is the potential there in your area?

Are there other tool trucks working the area you're looking at?

How stable are the businesses you'd be visiting, and are they very profitable?

How many mechanics/technicians are employed at each shop?

A good tool man knows when to deal with a guy, and when to hold firm on pricing....don't give away the farm, but don't gouge the piss outta them either.

Let us know what you decide on....would be cool to have a "tool man" amongst us!

My matco guy is awesome. He comes over to you and ask how work is going this week and if you have any questions. if you pay him cash you get a discount. his truck is packed full of everything.

He is at our shop on friday at 11am no matter what. none of the other trucks are this good.

If you buy enough stuff from him, he often throughs something free in too. my friend bought a metric hex socket set from him, and he through the fractional one in too because he was a good customer.
