BBM -- not seeing what you are speaking of in the Task Mgr. The computer has 73 processes running though. :o

I'm probably missing a screen in between as I'm just tagging along going by memory. I'm a Mac-user. ;)
When you hit CTRL-ALT-DEL, you get a small window and you should be able to go to a subscreen where you can view the CPU and Network load.

It keeps spiking the CPU usage randomly

That 'pretty much' rules out any virusses or anything capturing the PC's resources or network I would think.

What's the brand of the router/modem?

I have heard/read once that when using both Wifi AND cable, that performance would plumet with certain models. But this would usually be the Wifi-transfer that would suffer.
