  • Question about value of mopar 4-speed

A friend of mine has a mopar 4-speed that he got out of a street rod project. It was behind a 340 but the engine has been sold. The transmission is complete with the shifter, bellhousing, trans, and the driveshaft. The previous owner supposedly took it out of a 1970 barracuda that he totaled back in the day but we have no way to prove it. we are both chevy guys so I am trying to help him find out what this trans. is wirth and what other engines it would fit. Any other info on it would be great! Thanks in advance!

Re: Question about value of mopar 4-speed

The two A-883 od tranys I bought last year were found on craigs list they both had bell housings and clutch asy but no shifter. I paid $250 for the stocker and $300 for the rebuilt with a side case leak. I see them any where from $200 to $600.

Well I have stopped buying stuff for cars I don't own. Is that a step in the right or wrong direction?

Locally, in "unknown" condition the OD trans can sell for $100. - $200.

23 spline 4 speeds typically go for $300 up dependent on condition and the 18 spline "hemi" trans sell for a lot more.

The carline makes a difference in price as well, A - 833 trans had different length tailshafts depending on what vehicle it came from. The B& E body version usually asks asks a little more than the A body trans around here. Overdrive versions from trucks sell for peanuts.

      Hope that helps a bit.

I'm not an expert, but the big block 833's are the ones that have some value, especially the ones for B and E bodies. Those guys wanting a date coded one for their resto's are willing pay more. The small block ones and the 833OD's don't seem to have the same value. Surprising, since most Mopar guys think every part is made of titanium. Especially surprising compared to a Muncie 4 speed.

Difference between the big & small block A 833 is the bellhousing only. Unless it's the extra heavy duty 18 spline model found behind hemis and some 6 pack cars

I'm beginning to believe that Mopar guys charge so much for their stuff because they won't admit to themselves or anyone else that they have rusty, overweight parts. They pay the obscene prices to keep themselves believing that ;D

referencing the OP, I see them for around 3 to 4 hundred bucks on the local CL

It ain't the mopar guys that are pushing the prices up - it's the opportunists who are into it for all the wrong reasons.

Mopar guys are really no doifferent from any other real car guys - ready to help each other out in any way they feasibly can.

Hell - I'd never have gotten my car together if not for the assistance and generosity of many of my friends within the Mopar community.

Re: Question about value of mopar 4-speed

The prices reflected the numbers built. There were only 40,000 Cudas made per year for four years. Compare that to Camaros, Chevelles, Mustangs and such, it's not surprising why the Mopar stuff was/is more expensive.

Mopar 4 speed transmissions were used by all NASCAR teams till they were replaced with
                          aftermarket transmissions.

The E-Body transmissions are easy to identify as they have two distinct mounting pads for the shifter. One near the tip of the tailshaft, and the other closer to the main body of the transmission.
