Re: If you were building a BEATER '68 Charger for cheap...

I'll be the jackass championing the 383 cause.

You said it's a BEATER '68 Charger....BEATER '68 Chargers are powered by 383s not LS motors.

Pissing off the Mopar guys? Just run the wrong turn signal lenses or something and those guys will whiz down their legs in anger.

The 383 bolts right the hell in. Even if the LS is a freebie, it's going to be a project fabbing all the junk up to make it fit in there right.

Sticking the LS motor in there is going to make it yet another rough car/shiney engine blah-mobile.

Re: If you were building a BEATER '68 Charger for cheap...

Does this thing have 3 pedals on the floor or only 2?

If you wanna row your own, I would opt for the 383. If you wish to use a slushbox, stab the 400 in it with the heads from the 383 (906's are better than 452's). I know you have a slew of intakes for the low-deck big blocks, so put one on that suits your purpose and go like hell. Some 3.55 gears and a poor-man's Sure-grip overhaul (I garnered this trick from the pages of the old Cars Illustrated magazine, thanks Tony DeFeo!) and you will be in business!

Put on some 15X7 cop wheels wrapped with 265/50R15's so you can use the disc brakes from a 1971 or newer B-body, throw some big drums )11" x 2-1/2" from any old Road Runner, Satellite station wagon or, get this, Traildusters and Ramchargers used them when equipped with the 4-1/2" bolt pattern, and the backing plates and drums will bolt right on to a 8-3/4 housing. You may need to shim them out just a tad for use with the 8-3/4" axle, but not more than 3/16". Next, pop in a Mopar Performance adjustable proportioning valve for the proper brake bias and have fun!

On the front suspension, get some torsion bars from a big block Satellite or Coronet wagon along with the front sway bar from the same car. The B-body Mopes handle like pigs if you don't properly set up the bump steer, but this is easily remedied by following the Mopar Performance chassis manual. Buld a set of stiff, flat springs for the rear, similar to what the 1969 GTX had. You can cannibalize a set of springs from the front of a Ramcharger to get the leaves you need.

Put that thing on a diet. If it is not absolutely necessary for the performance of the vehicle, get rid of it!

                Go 383-4 speed 390 gears or 383 -727 323 gears .
That would make the perfect beater.

THANK YOU!....I knew it was a matter of time before some of you came to your senses and voted 383....

This whole LS thing was driving me nuts...I am no purist but that is as f*ked up as 2 boys f*king....

Out of simple curiousity, has this made it over to Moparts yet? I haven't checked the site but "Put an LS into a '68 Charger" will get the same reaction as if you threw a bag of kittens into a woodchipper...pitchforks, torches, etc.

Wow Ron, nicely laid out plans.

My objection to the "400...727" is the 727.

And "Very used" = blown up soon. I think the 383 with a proper manual will give you the chance to get hooked instead of flogging a beat 400 and auto that are destined to die and frustrate the shit out of you.

Give yourself a chance at enjoying open track. Its a lot more fun when you don't spend your entire day trying to limp a beat animal around the track.

For get inches a 383 will beat the crap out of a 400.

But its going to do that anyhow.

                              Unless he uses the ls6.
