not so fast with the olive branch! ;) I was impressed by a carburetor that apparently costs tens of thousands of dollars to optimize for a specific application. I was equally pleased that we matched it in 3 or 4 complete pulls - or about 30 minutes - with a batch fire, fuel-only Megasquirt-1.

Yes. The same amount one would spend optimizing a carb + intake on any current NASCAR engine. We were told 2000 or more dyno pulls, and 1000+ manhours is what it takes to get one in this kind of tune. It idled at 14.7:1 and levelled out in the low 12s at WOT - truly amazing. And although I beat it's peak number by 1.5hp, it *averaged* .5 more HP through the powerband, which is the bigger deal.

The guy who told us how many hours are spent on that kind of combo, built/owns a 300mph blown fuel roadster so I believe him. Even if you cut those numbers in half, you're talking $50,000+ I bet the NASCAR teams spend more than that on a carb and intake combo... what do you think?

          HA!!!!

Not bad for a carb "out of the box." We got snookered.

Alright, I have more respect. I didn't think it would even be in the ballpark, no matter how much work had been done on it. But how often do you run into a carb that has that much work and dyno time...

And Beck is a genius. But I think you can come to that status quicker when you have your own dyno. I've got the out most respect for the man.

None of that respect takes away from the fact that you tuned within a statistical dead heat in a very short period of time.

you don't really tune just the carb ...so they buy a tricked out [read LEGAL ] carb from nuytten or braswell , davinci or one of the other guys , hendrick , childress , roush , gibbs do this in house , I am sure
              baseline
and you run the motor on the dyno at the gear you are pulling
jet and adjust the airbleeds to set the curve at what cam and valve lash you are pulling
the teams are paying the engine builder and tuner hundreds of thousands of dollars
hendrick is building engines for 6-8 teams
roush/yates is building motors for 9 teams

you think they are throwing 50gs in the carb ...per CAR ??? per RACE >> if they are , the 10-40 million for team is justified then , but I think someone is cranking up the bull meter on ya little man
just working off a base line ..like I am sure the software in your fancy pants laptop has a baseline ..

              have fun
from the washed up loser sidelines , dreaming I was you

Jim, I wish you were here, you'd have a blast working with us.

The carb we ran against was tuned and dyno'd by John Beck. He'd used it for a couple of other EMC builds and had 100s and 100s of dyno pulls on it.

I know nothing about NASCAR carbs. I'm sure they are as tricked out as they come, and if you include the R&D costs, which you should, they must be pretty expensive. How much? I don't know. And at that level of racing, what I consider expensive, they may think is simply common.
