    Re: Any runners here?

I try to run daily, yesterday I ran 2 miles at the park in about 17-18 minutes (using the clock in my car as a timer haha)

but FUUUUUUUUUU was that cold, I may just start going to the gym to do that instead
Rumors of my demise by rollover have been greatly exaggerated.

the cold. ouch, that catches up.

there is only so much immunity to gain.. a runner ends up the long term suffocator. In the brain.

I got influenced to run in little league, over 25yrs ago now... I was short with deer legs, there was only one guy shorter, and I ran the second fastest...stayed that way for a long time.

I ran for training for the air force, I knew what weather to wait for (maine can kill you). The runner legs did catch up to me there, I ended up with the duality of yelling cadence and running.

Today no run at all with a mangled foot, took part of my leg. I can't say I miss it much. the benficial run needs healthy environment to go with it.

these city runs etc... damn. I'll go back to drinking hot sterile fluids and feel cleaner lungs. :

          Yup....

Well, this morning at PT I showed up early and ran a mile to warm up. Then when we ran our actual 5 minute warm up, two other first years and I decided to push a little bit. Even after the running a mile more then them I still managed to finish a dozen or so meters ahead of them. So you could say I was bring chased.

A few things to try. First is somewhat counter-intuitive. When I first started running outdoors in the weather and I was bundled up, I would always get to cold. When I started doing the same runs in t-shirt, light running pants, stocking cap, and a pair of light gloves, I could run 2-3 times as far without getting cold.

The other thing is to put your tongue on the roof of your mouth. It helps warm the air you inhale.

The last thing is always to work your run to end up where you can immediately get into a warm area. Going from warm while running to cold can be seriously detrimental.

I run in a longsleeve t-shirt and shorts even below freezing if I know I'm ending up back at the gym or someplace else warm. I do need to get gloves, running tights, and ear pops. Hats, sweatbands, and ear muffs give me a headache so I want the litte things that only clip onto your ears to try. Considering I run without any media device I like to run on a course where there are things to look at.

Yep, and I'm an Airman, too! I ran 6.5 miles this morning. I ran the Seoul Marathon in March and I'm thinking of doing El Paso this March. I used 'The Non-Runner's Guide to Marathon Training'--highly recommend this for a first-timer. Hal Higdon is also good.

Eagle, I agree with the cold weather running advice given by Walt and CTX. I ran a PFT along the shore of Lake Michigan in December. I wore running shorts, long sleeve T-shirt and a pair of gloves. It was around 20 degrees not counting the wind chill coming off the lake.

I don't run as much as I used to. Fifteen years in the Marines has taken its toll on my knees. Would like to work my way up to being able to run a half marathon again. I could run one now, but the pain afterward wouldn't be worth it.

The last three months have been the best as far as staying fit that I have ever had. I have lost 5-10 lbs, built up my endurance to where I can easily go ten miles, and I am in serious danger of maxing out my next PT test. But I really want to do more and go farther, and the AF marathon seems like a good goal. It gives me plenty of time to train, plus training will keep me in form over the summer so I can come back to school next year and still be in form.
I work the boston marathon every year, the army has 15-20 troops that run it for charity, they run all 26+ miles in full gear and 80 lb pack in boots..
come on down I'm sure they'd love another troop, if you think you have it in you, cause I have no idea how they do it..

Those Soldiers have my utmost respect, but that is something I lack the physical strength and endurance to pull off. My ability to perform athletically is based off of being light and efficient. I weigh about 150 lbs, every work out I do is focused on increasing muscle endurance and efficiency more that strength and mass. Frankly, I won't argue the Army ROTC cadets here have a much more physically challenging course. They do ruck marches, PT at least three times a week, and they tend to be the bigger, stronger body types. We do PT twice a week (it would be three but there were some issues with our unit being understaffed due to a RIF), and we never do any kind of ruck march. Their PT test grades on how many push and sit ups they can do over 2 minutes as opposed to our 1 minute, and their run is 2 miles as opposed to our 1.5.

But the core thing is that our missions our radically different, and it requires different type of people.

Thanks for the tips on the training regimens. The school semester is about the right length for one of Hal Higdon's courses, so I will probably use a slight modification on one of his plans to get into form. Then as long as I can keep in form over summer, I should be in solid shape for September.

Also, have any of you tried a toe shoe like vibram 5 fingers? They are becoming pretty common up here, and people say that they have a positive effect on reducing running injuries. I have spent a decent amount of time running barefoot, but not anything over a mile. I'm not even sure if I could wear them for USAF PT.

Sister (also a personal trainer) says they are exactly like running barefoot with the exception that you don't get burns, rocks, and glass in your feet. Not recommended for people like me with near flat feet. I wear Mizunos religiously now but have also had good success with Adidas and Asics. Nike's don't work well for my arch type. Go to a running store with your current shoes and let them fit you for some. Buy the first set there as a thanks for the service then if your habits or physiology doesn't change, buy them online.

Yeah, My sis wants me to get them. She's also a personal trainer, physical therapist's asst., dance/yoga/zoomba/aerobic kickboxing instructor, but I have probably twice the running mileage she does. I have OK foot structure, but I pretty much stick with new balance all terrain running shoes since they are one of the few shoe companies that offer an 11 1/2 EEEE, and they have have a tread pattern that you can stay upright on ice with.

I preferred to stay with New Balance 993's, could take a beating that all-surface running could dish out. Problem is that the supports would flatten out quick with my weight, but it's what I get for the ability to find 15 1/2 wide running shoes.

You have the oposite foot from me, I have an 11 AA-AAA so I need narrow shoes. New Balance and Brooks will not work for me, too wide.

I'm probably running 20 miles a week on average right now. most days its a jog with exercises every 5 minute intervals (divebombers for 1 minute, 250 squats, 100 pushups, 50 jump squats) and occasionally I'll run 8-10 miles if I'm over weight or coming up on a fight like now. right now its 7 days a week, 4+ hours a day.
