Why is barrel abbreviated "bbl" ?

Just curious why barrel is abbreviated "bbl" and why do you get less beer in a barrel then oil? Beer is 31 gallons a barrel and oil is 42 gallons a barrel.

PSI is easy. Stands for Pounds per Square Inch. BTW - this can be referenced to atmosphere (the way we're used to thinking of it) PSIA - or to a set standard in a sealed gage (not open to atmosphere) called PSIG. PSIG is actually more precise as it's unaffected by barometer, but sometimes folks have trouble wrapping their heads around that one.

As far as the "Richard" thing. My middle brother has been a proud, erect Dick for his whole life. That way, when Mom called us it was "DickDaveDan" pronounced as one word. Evidently, the alliteration was worth it.

Then wouldn't one think that a 4-barrel should be "bbbbl.". You know one "b" for each barrel so you can tell when you read it, how many barrels it has..Now that makes sense to me but so did joining the Navy once...
