Versatube or RED IRON building for shop?

I'm really stuck on which route to go. We're building 3 shops on our place. My brother has a red iron 40x40x12 thats going up. I'll have a 40x60x12 and a 40x80x12 After pricing the expense of everything the red iron is twice the cost of a Versatube shop. I realize the red iron building is industrial strength....but we dont get tornados or snow or winds here.

    Opinions PLEASE !!!!!! http://www.versatube.com/

I like what I've seen on their website. How much did they quote for a building that size?

40x80x12 with 2 10x16 doors openings and one set of double entry doors was 18,333.00 delivered to my door.

wow - that's a great price! you can always install a gantry crane set up in the future if you need the overhead lifting capacity.
The versatube sure looks like it could have some advantages.

The next big cost will be the concrete - make sure a vapor barrier goes down before the concrete is poured so you don't end up with a "sweating slab"

I'm envious! A friend had the amish build him a 40x84 and the thing is freaking HUGE amazing how many cars you can get in there - he doesn't have power out there yet so he's storing cars for folks for the winter to make a few bucks to offset the price of insulating and getting power run out to it.

Best of luck and take lots of pictures - garage journal is a dangerous place - but there are some good ideas there if you keep things in perspective.... I shutter to think what some of those guys have spent on their "garages".
There's always something new to learn.

Re: Versatube or RED IRON building for shop?

My suggestion is to look at Kentucky Steel Truss Building Co. I got mine from them and it's a great building. But I had different issues than you face. I live in a hurricane area and at that time they were the only place that would put their wind load on paper so I could pass it along to the building inspectors - who were more than happy with it. Their kits may seem a bit more pricey at first but all of theirs include galv perlins and girts so you're not buying wood locally. They found that the tech screws, when screwed into wood, will eventually back out which leads to leaks. So that's what worked for me.

Notice how I've failed to provide the info you requested and have, instead, made the decision somewhat more confusing!
