    Visitor at Weeville!

So we're camping at home this afternoon, the doorbell rings.

Surely not another marketer. We have the very small "No Soliciting" note above the doorbell, after all. But still they mash the button and piss me off.

No, it was a guy I went to school with. He didn't stay 5 minutes. A lifelong aquaintance I grew up with in the childhood neighborhood. He said it would be a shame and a sin to be this close to our house and not look me up. Came to say hey, that's all. He said hey and it sure was great to see him again after all these years.

I begged him to stay, but no, he just wanted to say hey and he was on his way. Got other things to take care of in the area. Was close to here, just wanted to say hey, and that's what he did.

Wow. Why don't more people do that? I'm sure I don't do it enough myself.

That's a durned good question PDub - I know there's folks that have moved away, passed away, or I've otherwise lost touch with that I sure wish I'd dropped in to say hello to more often when I had the chance.

Ya know what device "they" blame for the fact that folks don't know their neighbors much anymore?
    - automatic garage door openers.
There's always something new to learn.

I can see that, we have one. But there's a front porch on our house, too, with rocking chairs. On select days of the season (the afternoon sun hits the front porch and it's hot as Hades out there), we sit out there and wave at our neighbors across the street whose porch is in the shade. They can enjoy theirs more.

We holler back and forth on those few days of the year, "How ya doin?" "Great, thanks!" etc.

When we first moved to this neighborhood when we were friends and family with the folks around us in our old neighborhood, we made every attempt to bond with the immediate neighbors here. We tried more than they did, but there's a huge gap. They are younger, raising rug rats running everywhere, and at the end of the day with the age difference there's just nothing constructive to talk about. We stand out that way, the older beer drinkers who have no kids at all. What do you discuss?

The garage door allows us to put both of our vehicles in there and you can't tell if we're home or not, from the street.

But my old friend used GPS to find us and rang the doorbell anyway, and we were right there in the living room/pool hall and answered the door.

He didn't have to do that. But he did it. That's neat. That's human effort. Not that he and I were ever all that close, but close enough that he felt compelled to do it.

There it is. Human spirit. He didn't stay, didn't want to. But he went out of the way to ring the doorbell.

I'm in a training week this week, and strangely that all tied in. Doing a little extra matters to other people. It sure mattered to me.

He didn't have to do that.

When I go home on leave there are so many people outside the family that I want to drop in and visit with but I never have enough time...so I do just that...knock on the door, hug and hand shake and say hey...I always wish I could stay longer...

Since we moved to the Southland we've encouraged our old Michigan (and other) buddies to come on down to Paradise and a few have. It's always special when someone comes by. All are welcome as long as they don't smoke in or around the house (ME's NASTY allergic).

But along the lines of this thread - when I'm in MI I try to check in with old, long-time buddies. I have friends who my first wife and I introduced to each other in HS and they're still together - like 45 years running! I almost always get to their house with the slightest of warning (they spend a lot of time spoiling Grands so they're not always home). Others, too. They always ACT like they're happy to see us. Keeping up with old friends is one of the best parts of being retired.
