A few minutes with the MIG welder will fix that.

Acids in the oil, or just water?

A pre '79 350? It should be easy enough to just get another one.
I backed my camaro off a trailer and missed the ramp at the track once. A sheet metal screw with a float bowl washer and silicone was all I needed to finish the day.

a good candidate to decipher some positive crankcase ventilation. I have done this to daily drivers. used to blame "alkalinic trees"
I assume this was an older engine, open plenum, little breather for pcv..

An oil pan rusting out from the inside, wow, can't say I've ever seen that before.

This is off my 77 GMC Jimmy. It was stored in a barn for years after the guys grandpa died,or so it was claimed. The outside of the pan looked as if it had been sandblased heavy then left to rust.It was very pitted on the side and started weeping when the motor was ran. Would not leak a drop when parked since it was above the level of oil in the pan. Got a new one from Summit for $34. Just one more PIA with this truck. Bonus side is it has 70,000 original miles and the drive train is tight, body very decent. Down side is I have had to install a new fuel tank and lines, fuel pump and carb and tires. And it is full time FWD.I will fix that in the future. The fuel pump started failing 45 min after starting the 3 hour trip home form Indy.Did I mention it was raining/snowing when we left Indy?? I just kept it going by throwing it in neutral and feathering/pumping the gas pedal when it would starve for fuel. There were times it would only do 15 MPH,on the side of the road in the dark with 4 way flashers on but we made it! It took 4.5 hours to get home. And it died right where I parked it and would not refire till a new fuel pump was installed. This will be my winter vehicle and I have a plow for it for my driveway.

I would have needed a case of beer and a paperbag to put over my head, to finish a day like that

It is a shame these old vehicles can't talk. What secrets they would reveal!
While cleaning the pan rails I noticed the connecting rods had their big ends punch numbered front to rear 1 thru 8. I know you can't hardly see it in the picture but they are. I don't believe GM ever did that on a factory build so I will guess this motor is rebuilt.

My Caprice's 454 was stamped from the factory. The 1970 454s were hand assembled. There was even check marks stamped on a pad back by the oil filter.

Ahh, that sort of thing builds character, hah. I lived in the midwest for 20+ years. If you can keep,
or get a car running out there, you will get 'er done anywhere.

Well it has been awhile since y'all have seen the winter vehicle. Here it is ready for action. To recap: the truck came from Indianapolis In. off of Craigslist.71,000 actual miles. The tires came from Elkhart In. off of Craigslist. Got all five 31 -10.50-15 BFG's . They had 900 miles on them. The plow came from Craigslist out of Michigan City In. The high back and matching fold down rear seat (you can't see) came from a 83 Blazer in the boneyard. The used part time kit and new chain for the transfer case came from 4 BY HEAVEN in New York. Didn't get to the Spartan locker in the rear diff yet. Money is too tight right now.
