  • When the kids rule the racing or WTF was I thinking?Del Worshams in the same boat....

See....a few years back I got my son into junior dragsters.....little did I know that it would plague me like VD or Herpies(never goes away). Last season we logged well over 12,000 miles going to junior races. It was easy going....laid back....relaxing...fun family time. Well for 2014 I and his mom along with our generous sponsor decided WTH...let's give Junior Comp a shot...we are already towing to race...why not run 2 cars...YEEHA!...double the fun. Someone should have shot me in the face....seriously. This past weekend I damn near killed our sponsor...my wife....my son....and lastly myself. I have officially bit off more than I can chew. At Irwindale this past weekend I literally lost 12lbs chasing /towing/preping/maintaining/....whatever else could happen while racing in the Division 7 series Junior League. I now have 2 totally different cars to figure out how to screw up. Only bright note was he got licensed for Junior Comp....and DEL WORSHAM signed off on his license....insert BIG GRIN from the kid. Del has twin daughters that started running late last season. Guess what....he got sucked in BIG TIME.....those peraly whites were flashing all weekend. Just wait Del....it's a long season....without structure like the BIG SHOW. You'll be worn down to like a #2 pencil....anyways....we had a BLAST !!!!!.....and here's the new ride !!!!

Racing is an incurable decease which has no known cure and you now have it big time.

One question who builds your engines?

Years ago when my sons were racing karts I used to build their Briggs engines and back in the mid 90's I would charge around $520.00 for a stock engine that was blueprinted and had a hot cam and alcohol carb.

Today the guy's tell me you can pay between $1,500 and $3,000 dollars for a modified Biggs engine that will run up front.

            Is that true? Jimbo

Junior Comp is for kids that turn 14 and would like to run an index class in the junior drag racing league. The index is 6.90 in the 1/8 mile. They have to make 6 license passes just like big cars. They are on a .5 pro tree. Cars can be powered by any motorcycle or snowmobile motor as long as it's a 4 stroke. They can be manually shifted or auto shifted. This car has been 6.40@109 in the 1/8 at half throttle and carrying 100 lbs of ballast. They do run 1/4 after kids turn 16. We are looking to qualify in Super Comp with the car in the future and make it to a National event in the class.

                best of luck!

Jimbo...the only thing Briggs on these are the coils!!!!...they are billet blocks... 3.546 bore by 3.0 stroke. .625 lift cams... 1.95 intake 1.750 exhaust...42 MM Mikuni carbs on Methanol.... 3,000.00 gets you a used motor...6850.00 gets you a brand new one ....

Great - you've crushed my dream... My son is 4. No way we can afford to race when the "briggs" engines are no longer anywhere near affordable.

Is there an affordable class? Maybe I need to look into "stock block" go karts or something - I think they run those at Flatrock.

OR Maybe traditional sports... like water skiing... LOL... karate? how about golf? Truth is anything can get nuts expensive - but I was hoping for a family sport that wasn't that much of a drain on the wallet!
There's always something new to learn.

at 8yo you start out running 12.90(stock Briggs or Briggs LO206 motor).
You can buy turn key competitive cars for 2500.00 to 3500.00 complete(seen some as low as 1800.00). IT's BRACKET RACING...run what ya brung....some of us just go WAY overboard....I've seen a lot of 2500.00 cars take out 14,000.00 dollar cars.... and out here no one judges you for what you run....we are all family and there to help.

John - Contact David (Rack4U on here) and see if he has a car left. His daughter and nephew were WAY into this until they outgrew it. He had one car left but it may have gone to his younger neph - worth an ask, anyhow.

Racing as a way of getting out of control fast when it comes to spending money.

When my sons were racing karts back in the 80's and 90's I knew many guys who could not control their love for kart racing and had to file for bankruptcy.

Year after year they would purchase the latest chassis and engines, trailers and tow rigs and many even had their motor builder travel with them to each race and they paid for his time, travel expenses, food and he even got to bring along his wife.

This guy was spending about $50,000 Dollars a year trying to become a W.K.A. National Champion

I remember seeing guys spending over $25,000 dollars a year and more watching their sons races for trophies.

One guy bought a Frieighliner Semi with a 53' Renegade trailer that had the living quarters in the front of the unit for traveling around the country to ever National Kart Race.

I knew families that raced from California to New Hampshire and the father and mother would drive the motor home and tow the race trailer across the country to every race and so that their sons did not miss any school another family member would drive them to the airport and get them on a plane to fly to where ever the race was.

My sons used to race against who eight year old kid from Hueytown, Alabama who went to every National race in the country and when I used to see him and his father I asked his dad when John went to school and the father looked me straight in the eyes and told me in no uncertain terms his son was going to be a race car driver. I don't think the kid ever went to school.

Back in the 80's you were awarded points based on how many karts were in your class at a W.K.A. National Event.

One time I signed us in and there were only about 23 karts entered and the guy next to me was filling out more entry forms and just adding different names to them and when I asked why he was doing it he explained that if his son won he wanted to get as many points as he could for the win.

Each entry form cost $30.00 plus more money for each person in the pits. This guy was spending an additional few hundred dollars just in case his son won the race. That's how crazy some parents get doing this.

Fathers have fun with your sons and daughters racing and try not to loose total control over your spending.

                            Jimbo
