    Salavage Yard Safety......go in pairs

Many of us can somewhat relate to the story below.......can't count the times I propped up a car to pull a part from it.
Reading the article, says he was pinned for several days.

This mornings St. Louis Post Dispatch......
    News > Law & Order > Story
ST. CLAIR COUNTY: Body of Belleville man found pinned under car

    01/02/2008

Employees of the Paule junkyard found the body of of the Belleville area after he had been pinned under a wrecked old Honda for several days.

Workers made the discovery about 10 a.m. Friday as they searched the junkyard on Freeburg Avenue at the southeast Belleville city limits after noticing that a car had been parked along the property's fence for several days, Bob Shay, chief deputy St. Clair County coroner, said Tuesday.
apparently was trying to remove a part from the Honda when the car fell on him, Shay said.

We did a few unsafe things at the junkyard I worked at years ago, but something like that would be very unlikely to happen....and the dogs would have found him the first evening!

This is why I'm dead set against ramps. I know of two guys (one was a friend) who were crushed to death under them. Nasty way to go.

i try to never lay under a car at the junkyard. i have had cars start to come down when i was under the hood. which sucks when you are try to take something off and next thing you know the car starts to move.

All of our local junk yards, will not let you go get stuff on your own. You go in, tell them what you are looking for and take a seat. Watch TV, drink a Coke, eat a snack from the vending machines. They send a crew to go get the part for you. If it is something obscure, not worth a lot to them. They will give you a ride on their golf cart to the cars you want to see. You point at what you want and they pull it off for you. 8)

dad dropped the right rear cornner of a 74 Newport on him .He lived to tell about it. After that I had to find a new place besides his drive to work on cars because after that , even jack stands and a foor jack weren't enough .(he wasn't using the stands) I'd be under a car and he would start throwing fire wood logs in any where he could.

Re: Salavage Yard Safety......go in pairs

This reminds me of a story my dad told me about one of his junkyard exploits. He was pulling a transmission out of a 55 Chevy when the cinderblocks(!) that was holding up the car started to tip over. An attentive friend that came with him grabbed his feet and pulled him out from under the car right before it tipped over. I guess I owe his friend my life along with my dad's....

With that being said, I ususally have someone come with me when I go to the yards. I won't go anywhere near the underside of a car unless someone is with me.
