    Hone-O-Drive Overdrives.

Went over to 'my' newly conqured Brother's Ex-Garage today, and began to fiddle around with the 1'st Car that got in my way. That Car was my Brother's 'only'(He's had other truely 'BIG' Cars in the past...but this was/is the only one He actually kept....)'BIG' Car:-a '65 Buick Wildcat. Under it's Drawbridge/Hood is the origional Dual-Quad(Carter AFB's..)425,behind it,a T-10 Four-Speed. Although it IS 'Loaded',it doesn't have A/C or Cruise(which WAS an option on these Cars....even in 1965..),it DOES have "everything else"..........including a Center Console....with ANOTHER Shifter Lever sticking out of the passenger side of the Console :o! I've heard of these Hone-O-Drives before, but I still wasn't all to sure,so I called the Man Himself(and His Brother's...). One look was all it took:-"Hon,what you've got there is a genuine 'H-O-Drive'." "The guy who bought this thing new must've been some sort of mileage-master/numbers-cruncher"(He must have been....there was SEVERAL little Memo/Notebooks with all sorts of Mileage figures, parts prices, distances between Landmarks,ect.........in short, the typical 50's/60's/70's American Consumer....). "Judgen' from all these hand-written Books 'an stuff,we're lookin' at some sort of anal-rententive type who simply wanted 'just-the-facts/His $$$$'s worth out of this Car.........there ain't nothing wrong in that.' Seems that the H-Drive adds Two more gears to the 4-Speeds origional four Jack told me. Anybody else know,what's-what with these Overdrives? The more info, the better ;)! The rest of the Car is just as impressive:--34-thousand origional Miles(it had just over 26K when big Brother got it from the origional owner...),no a speck of rot anywhere(just like the rest of His Cars in here.....),all of the origional parts, plus a Junkyard-bought single-4-BBL Carb/Intake combo just in case the twin-4's proved to be too much for Him was in a Carboard Box in the otherwise empty(and HUGE...)Trunk,along with 'an origional GM/N.O.S. Distributer. Anybody have any Carter/Dual-Quad tuning 'tips' out there ;)? ~J/W-OO6.

    Re: Hone-O-Drive Overdrives.

It's a planetary overdrive, like a Gear Vendors unit.
They were used in Baldwin Motion cars, which would have been nice with a big block and 4 series gears.

I remember the Motion magazine ads in the '70s usually listed them but didn't know anyone who ever actually had one.

I never had or drove one but they were rumored to be pretty tough. If that Buick is underfoot you can send it my way. I'll clear out a spot in the shop for it. I'll even come get it. Sounds like a way cool car - pics, please.

You don't want some old 4600-lb. Buick,Dan besides,it's 'an old people's Car ;D. Still,I dig the Vac-Gauge in the center of the Console,I like that for some reason. With a Battery installed 'an hooked up,EVERYTHING WORKS including the Radio/all the Power Windas, the Defogger Motor, even the power Trunk Realese Button under the Dash. Thank's for the replies. Keep 'em comming ;). ~J/W-OO6.

Yes I DO! I LOVE old Buicks - started out in a Buick dealership in that era. A 4 speed Wildcat dual quad is NOT a common vehicle - even at that time. The oddest one I remember - we had a customer with a '62 Special 215 V8 4 speed - in a 4 door sedan! He was an engineer at Buick at the PG and knew the codes to order.

                      Re: Hone-O-Drive Overdrives.

Dan,I could NEVER sell the Buick because it was my Brother's Car(s)and He intrusted them to me & my Sister's. As of January I've been paying property taxes/ect. on His Building. I'm in 'charge' of it & it's contents now. So far,I've transfered all the Car's Title's over into my name, switched over all the policies, ect. It's actually been a bit nerve wracking :P! Owning 65 Cars is 'fun'..and then it's not. This Spring,I'm going to have some work done to the Building:-some Brick-pointing,a Drainspout replacement in the rear of the Building, and get some attractive Landscaping done. ~J/W-OO6.

                        Re: Hone-O-Drive Overdrives.

I have a broken hone o drive, I got some good use out of it before it broke. Always had some driveline vibration, I had it in 3 different vehicles. I think the big blocks did it in...and they were pretty mild at that.

The ring gear split in half one morning, had to get towed home.

Has a regular manual transmission synchro for shifting, so you should be able to shift it on the fly, if the linkage is strong enough.

Well, once the Car is up 'an running,I'm just going to drive it 'normal'...I don't plan on breaking it or ANYTHING on or under it. Well,it's time to move on to the Car behind it...a White(with Red Stripe((S)...)'67 GS-340/4-Speed Hardtop,TOTALY ORIGIONAL with only 15K ORIGIONAL on it. My Brother's only '67(it's the only '67 GS He ever had, although He DID have a '67 Skylark Convertable....)and was/is one of His favorites. He paid $1800 for it in 1987,buying it from the Man in Rising Sun,Maryland just a few miles from Ceicle(SP?)County Dragway ;D. Now,this Car DOES run & drive, and 'drive' it does ;D! It's 'kinda' fast ;)! ~J/W-006.
