  • Ballpark MPH in the mile from 1/4 MPH

With a 2.5 to 1 gear my car will run in the 150 to 160 mph in the 1/4 mile. I normally pick up about 30 mph from the 1/8 to the 1/4. Any guess what it will run in the mile? Its a low rpm big torque turbocharged Pontiac motor.
    Thanks Ed

What is your rpm at the 1/4 at 150/160? How much more rpm can you twist out of your Poncho safely?

Don't know what the RPM is with the 2.50 gear, with my normal 3.00 gear at 155mph its about 5400 rpm. I have a T400, tight PTC converter and a 30" tire. Engine has good parts and should be good to 6500 rpm but it doesn't make much power past 5500 RPM.
Do you drag race your car? and if you do what are you 1/4 and mile mph?

When we bracket raced it, we ran a 4.56 gear. With the current 3.08 gear, it went 10.00 @140 in the quarter with a glide and a 5500 stall convertor. As we run it now, with our 700r4 and a Precision Industries lockup convertor, it's gone over 200 at Maxton and at Loring. Aero is a big part of it. It sounds like you have a really strong Pontiac drag motor - I hope to see it run at Wilmington.

Remember to rethink your tuneup. You'll be running for an extended time (you can gestimate the time once you make a decent estimate of expected top speed) against an ever-increasing load. This is NOT drag racing although there are similarities. After pulling a number of pistons out of the track and cleaning up oil spills, I really hope you'll rework the tune. A little fatter and a bit less timing is likely called for. You probably already thought of that - but many haven't.

I wish Roy (darn if I can pull up his last name) was on here more often. He has made this switch with a Gen. 1 Camaro and went thru the whole deal. It turned into a quest for 200 that was a LOT more involved than he thought.

For a better guess. What kind of car and how much power?

My car is a tube chassis Triumph TR6.
The engine has made 700 HP at the tire at only 5100 rpm, it has a small 488 lift, 230 duration at 0.050" cam and a 4.5" stroke in a 400 block, which makes it a 488" engine.
I have just finished changing to EFI and E98 so I should be able to make more power.
Turbo is a old garret truck turbo with a 88 mm compressor.
Geezer thanks for the input, that gives me some idea.
Dan, I don't plan to push the tune up at all, lots of fuel and less then 20 degrees total timing.

                    Hello Joe,
All the Geezers hope that the ECTA crew has a great weekend. Thank you all again for the opportunity to race at Maxton. We'll see you in Ohio.

Looks like a bunch of Geezers to me!

The Triumph is great looking, for sure. Might be worth bringing it to a meet and have the inspectors look it over. Keith, Joe, and the crew will get you on the right path, safety-wise.

I ordered a rule book, looking forward to getting it.
I have put Kirkey drag seats in since the picture was taken and plan to put a spoiler on the front.
The chassis has a 8.50 cert, I have a Pro stock sized parachute and a Alum belly pan under the engine.
and the wheelbase has 14 extra inches, its now 102"
Other then a fire system, legal tires and a driving suit what looks wrong safety-wise?

It would be best to call me next week as I'm leaving for Maxton is a few minutes. I'm in the shop most days from 9 to 5 est...302.378.3013 Do you have any pics of the cage with the doors open. How it the cage braced? Which way does the hood open? When you get the book, look over the cage drawings, seat belt placement, fire systems requirements and roll cage padding.
