I'm not doing the rattle can rebuild on engine. I did paint all the brackets and such. I have a set of chromies sitting beside the new Edelbrock intake for when I rebuild the motor.

Did you notice all the paint came of the original valve covers, but that original decal is still there?
I did...and thats just freakin weird...

I say you rebuild that engine so that it is all sorts of mean and nasty..then leave the body as is...keep people scratching their heads....

I also vote for the unrestored look. Heck, even put those stripped stock valve covers on it. Just make it brutal. Big blue bottle hiding in the "tool bag" in the trunk. Big stall disguised as a slipping transmission. Oh, and ya gotta keep the column shifter. Wider than stock rallies on the back. I could go on... but I won't... cuz it's your car. Do what YOU want.

I'm thinking about steelies. 10 inchers out back. Or, maybe just 10 inch rallys back there, but black ones. Rallys look stupid body color.

Black rallies would look pretty sinister, but silver rallies would almost be hideable.

Today, I decided to play 'what if', so I dug out my Proform 750 DP and pulled the base plate off of it and stuck it on the Holley 750 DP. There were two reasons for this. First, was to be able to hook up the vacuum advance. Second, to get rid of the progressive linkage. I wanted to see if the carb worked better on my engine this way. It did, to an extent. I'd need to do a better job of tuning it get it to run better. But, it does great for just driving around.

While driving around, the car sputtered like it got a taste of bad gas. Turns out it got a taste of antifreeze. The heater hose literally snapped off at the intake. Thanfully, it happened a block from home.

Just for shits and giggles, I reassembled the Proform 750 and put it on the Caprice. If you recall, I had all kinds of trouble getting it to run right on my Impala. It would idle and accellerate fine, but cruising at city speeds it would buck and cough. It did the same thing on the Caprice, only to a lesser extent which I attribute to the Caprice's auto transmission. My guess there is something clogged in one of the tiny holes in the metering block, but I can't figure it out for sure. I've swapped metering blocks front to back and got the same result. IMO, it's just a great big POS.

In the end, the good ole Holley 3310, vacuum secondary went back. The car in it's current condition seems to like this carb the best. My friend Mal, will probably get the Holley 750 DP I tested back for his brother's project, a '68 Chevelle that's getting a built 454.

some people have all the luck.....my cars have a rule about parts breaking, it MUST be at least 100 miles from home and at least 10 pm;D

                      DWB - AAA!

At Seth's urging - we're now gold AAA holders.... with all the old junk we have - it's great peace of mind!

Rebel - I've had some carbs like the proform you're in mortal combat with - something you can't see is the problem, frustrating.

I'm interested - how does the base plate give you ported vacuum for the vac advance???

IMHO -- you can't beat a vac sed carb on a car with an automatic trans and streetable cam/intake combo.

Proform's billlet base plate has two vacuum ports. One runs under the throttle blades and the other goes over to the blades, then up and comes out above the throttle blades. It matches with their billet metering blocks that do not have ported vacuum ports. I can take a close up pic of it.

                          AAA - hotrodder's best friend.

I had a surging/sputtering problem at part throttle - upsized the primary jets 2 sizes and the problem was solved.

I tried that. But, the problem popped up after it had been running fine in the same configuration. I'll probably have to get new metering blocks.

Good thing you have a pile of carbs and parts to rob things from.... wouldn't want to just leave the vac sec on there and leave well enough alone.. :

It will stay on there for now. With the engine's condition it's a waste of time to go for horsepower. It runs just great with the 3310, so I will leave it alone. I just wanted to test the carb I just rebuilt; and see if I fixed the issue with Proform.
