Any one know a good harmonic balancer rebuilder/reconditioner? I'll post this in the tech section when I get closer to actually needing it.

They did the Caprice's 454 balancer $55 plus shipping. Two day turn around.

        • I'm happy I stumbled on this thread! I had one of the '67 Sprint LeMans with 4 speed in late 60's & 70's. Ran strong (surprising many Camaro owners.) One issue: burnt valves at 25,000 miles (due to space between larger valve and chamber edge?)
Building another one of those Sprint LeMans has been a dream and you have given me inspiration to do it! Thanks!

And my BBB damper for about that plus a core (BBB dampers are hard to find). Cool guys.

            • Ressurecting this thread. My company is sending me to Elko for a Mining Convention on the 9th and 10th, and I've decided that's the perfect opportunity to drop the OHC six blocks and heads off at the machine shop there for cleaning and checking out. Of course I'm not quite ready to take them there. I need to remove the baffles in the blocks as well as the oil fill tube, etc. And for the heads I need to remove the valves and such.

So tonight I started on one of the heads, the one that came on the 230cid engine. Over all it looked pretty decent. There are two things of concern though. The dampener spring on the intake of #4 was broken and none of the lash adjusters will come out. They are too crudded up on the bottom and need a solvent bath. So I'm leaving them in and letting the machine shop deal with removing them.

              The broken spring.

The valves lined up. Over all, visually, they look like they are in good shape.

The runners don't look too bad, probably could use just a little smoothing.

And to refresh your memory, this is one of the baffles that need to be removed from the blocks. The rivets need to be ground/drilled to be removed and unfortunately my grinder bit the dust =/

On the other head the lash adjusters came out just fine, but it did have an odd valve/spring that I'm curious to find out whats up with it.

              • Well my welded together cart performed excellently as I got both engine blocks out of the basement relatively easily.

Just propped it up. Not surprisingly I needed a cross brace, and a 2x4 worked good for that.

Everything going to the machine shop sitting in the carport ready to be loaded up.

                  • I'm having all of them hot tanked, cleaned checked for cracks and having the blocks cylinder walls sonic checked for thickness. Then I'll be picking a head and block to move forward with. Once I decide what the final bore will be I'll find a set of pistons for it. Then get the balancer rebuilt and have the rotating assembly balanced (balancer, crank, flywheel, rods/pistons).

I didn't sell it. Some guy totalled it out and the wreck was stolen. =/ That was in 2002 so I'm mostly over it =P

Going for a Turbo EFI combo and dropping it in a '69 Firebird, that I've yet to purchase.
