Doug - check with quality clutches here locally for that pressure plate, they rebuilt the clutch for the '54 in a few hours the day before woodward a few years back. Those guys are great - and can build you whatever you want, they also surface flywheels onsite.

    Don't forget www.fordfe.com - fepower.com is Jay Brown's site.
There's always something new to learn.

Pressure plate is here. Showed up about 3 days after the rest of it. I just went with McLeod stuff from Summit. Hopefully it'll work. The choices for the 1 3/8" 10-spline Toploader 4-speed seemed kind of limited.

Well, a couple of years later, a whole lot of fail, and not much progress. Turns out this thing had a clutch explosion at some point that took out the original trans and bellhousing, and put a hurt on the floorpan / tunnel. It also busted one of the dowel pin bosses off the back of the block. The previous owners put a small block toploader in it with a bellhousing from a 3 speed FE truck and cobbled together the clutch linkage, did some fairly crude patching on the clutch explosion floorpan holes, and called it good. This whole project has been one "WTF!!!" moment after another when I find some new hackery that's been inflicted on this poor Mustang.

So, long story short, I'm going to get a new 390 built for it this winter. I'm thinking of getting the 4.25" stroker kit from Survival Motorsports and making it a 445. A guy at work has a huge stash of FE's, so I'm going to get a new block from him. I think I can re-use the 427 LR heads, intake, carbs, other bits off the current engine. I'm tempted to get a set of Barry's Felony heads too, but I really want to keep the cost down. I've got adjustable factory rockers, so I might just put a solid cam in it. Roller would be nice, but they're expensive. Really just need to get this one finished and back up and running so I can move on to the Mach 1.

As much as it sucks the car wasn't put back together with professionalism, but not everyone is in a situation where that can be done. Lack of money and needing a car running as fast as possible forces some people to take short cuts.

Yeah, I'm sure it was mostly a money deal, either didn't have enough, or too cheap to pay for the right parts. I'm just frustrated at how much crap I've had to undo / redo, and I'm sure there's stuff I haven't found yet. I think they welded up the spider gears in the diff, but haven't pulled it out yet to look. Bought a couple of replacement toploaders, one small input from a '66 Fairlane GT 390, and one big input from a '69 Mustang 428 CJ. Bought the correct iron bellhousing, but thinking hard about getting a Quicktime one.
