So the full story...

I bought a 73 (red car) and 74 (blue car) with a ton of parts for $1000.00. I was going to part them out and be done with them..... but they grew on me. The blue car has been in a garage for the last twenty years. The owner shredded the crank and sold it to the guy who I bought it from. the blue car had its drivetrain pulled and disassembled. The red car has no title and is really rusty. The motor will fire and sort of run on a spray bottle with fuel.







I picked up a 75 from a member of the 914world site for $300.00. Originally a California car that had the 1/4 and door butchered to smooth/eliminate the door handles. He pulled it apart and did some work but real life got in the way. It sat for 3 years and I went to Georgia on Sunday and picked it up.



My plan is to make a driver out of the blue car. The BIG monkey wrench is i want to do it for zero cost. That's my my challenge to me. I have already sold off some parts.

So right now I'm $700 in the hole.

I have quite a bit of parts to get rid of. That's great except I just don't see the money going very far. The plan is to reuse, freshen up, recycle, and rebuild. My end goal is just a driver. Not a full bore resto or a show car.

mondo bondo! I was thinking about those cars recently, they are pretty neat. I had a model of one when I was a kid, and I did notice that when I was into real cars around 35 years ago, there was not much love for them. Pretty scarce these days. It would be fun to get ahold of a solid one to play with. Pretty light, eh?

Type IV VW engines, cool.

In our group we have 3 of those in sandrails, one is ours - 1700cc with flattop pistons dual weber 44's and a 4-1 header. Good engines, real gutsy, but can be quite pricey if you have to buy hard parts for it.

Yea real light and zippy with the right motor. The weird thing is when I bought the two this summer Kel and I were talking about parting them out and getting a bug. Started shoping and bugs of like condition were more money. Weird They will be a popular car soon. It has too much going for it not to jump in popularity and price.

On the porsche forums and craigslist it is tough to get a couple hundred bucks for a 1.8 or 1.7. The 2.0 is a thousand. The 6 cyl is well a "real porsche motor" $3000-$8000. Read snob 911 nerd motor. Me I like the 2.0 with a little cam and a 4 into 1 exhaust through a open chamber muffler. 120 hp moves them real well. 200 hp na suby 6 is a rocket ship. V* chevy 350 hp......you spend a lot in transmissions.

The Porsche guys don't see them as "real" Porsches.........but if you advertise them on TheSamba you will find a much stronger market. All of the buses after 72 iirc used that same engine, and all the type iv variants used them. They are seen as a big block in the vw realm.

Guy I used to work with had one.. Proud of it. When he sold it I asked why.. Said it had the VW motor.. I say, "So? You loved that car" but it's not a Porsche..
I think it is a nice bunch of cars.. You will enjoy it!

There is a guy in my subdivision that has one. Next time I see him working on it I will try to get a picture.

Should be a cool project! Do you have most of the parts now between the 3 cars?

Yea plenty of hard parts. I need weather stripping, gaskets, cables ect. Still it costs. My guess I will smoke through $1500-$2000.

Best way to yank apart a porsche philips screw gun and a 10m impact.

Not supper usefull for this job but oh what fun. I am saving the 1/4s and a bunch of small parts. The rest goes to the dump. Dad wants to prop a bunch of these in my backyard and create a "porsche ranch".

Porsche ranch? Why not a Porsche Porch? This is going to be good, my uncle has a 914 engine in his '65 Beetle in San Diego. He drags it out there and got featured for hitting a perfect light out there.

my subaru was just as rusted.
it would have been easier to get another one.

I am a mig welding fool anyway. I would have fixed that rusty one.

I have a perfect motor for that..I even looked for a 914 empty shell.
I have yet to put together my single pipe turbo 1781cc boxer.

13 second 914.. ? maybe even better.

The rust actually wasn't that bad. I just didn't have a title fore that one and the other one was a lot cleaner. I needed the 1/4 off it and the motor.

Started on the passenger side 1/4. No real reason other than it was the closest to me when I walked in the door. Ahhh drilling spot welds....
