My first bass amp was a Wurlitzer juke box amp. Power tubes were a pair of KT88's. Those suckers glowing purple in the background on a dark stage was a sight to behold!
Fender and Marshall are still selling tube amps like crazy. If you can get into one that does not utilize a printed circuit board, you will have a badass amp that will last for years and offer superior tone to a solid state piece.

It's really no different than trying to glue them back on after she has her way.
She's fast becoming a good guitarist. (she's already very good at piano, violin, and a bunch of other instruments since her youth)
She is starting to want better sounding equipment. So it's either fork out $3000 for a boutique amplifier, or make one that that sounds equally good using skills I already have, at a cost of less than $500. Plus so far it's been a fun project! I have the wood cabinet almost done, now working on the electronics as soon as I get the chassis finish she wants.
She knows I built my own recording and microphone preamplifiers, and I have a collection of percussion and recording equipment that's more valuable than ALL the cars we own (my original hobby) so she knows I should be building her our own nice sounding tube amp as opposed to going out and buying what everyone else has.
Plus the AX-84 "P1X" amp is reported to sound stellar with the mods I am adding to it (better output transformer, etc.). This is my first foray into tubes though.

I picked up a Crate V18 212 amp from Musician's friend (actually, I bought TWO of them!) for the paltry sum of $189 ea. when they clearanced them out. This is an all tube amp and I bought it with the intent of using it as a platform to build on. I think that for a couple hundred more, I can make this a badass that should (repeat, SHOULD) kick a Fender Deluxe Reverb to the curb. I like finding good deals and improving on them. I just need to get rid of the PCB and hand wire everything and then upgrade to some better tubes. Post up some pics of your new tube baby!

isn't that one just a 12AX7 in the gain stage with the rest of the signal path on ICs though? I know some guys gut them and put in the single end equivalent of what I am doing, which is really popular. but the AX12 is supposed to be "recording quality" even at 5 watts... the Soldano version of the AX84 is like $3000
I have one of those "Tube Preamplifiers" from DBX and it sounded like bunk to my ears. Then I did a little reading and found it that when they say "Tube Preamp" they mean "There's a small tube in there that we run the signal through but it's mostly for marketing purposes"
I am no guitar guy so I am trusting what I am reading and hearing in sound clips. My ears will know, when it's done. I have yet to pick the 12" speaker for the cab I built too. Figure I'll start with a junky speaker so if I cook anything - it won't be one of those really nice british drivers I want to get.

Scott--this is the HiFi my dad made about the time I was born (48 yrs ago). It's supposed to be a 19" rack but it ended up a bit too narrow. Metal parts are painted the proper wrinkle black....which is what tube gear should be if it's not bare aluminum.
Notice this is pre-stereo. The tuner and amp are stuff I got in the last 10 years, not what we had way back when.
